'02 Tacoma, 5K miles; opinions wanted

My future brother in-law is looking at buying an '02 Toyota Tacoma in southern CA. It has just 5K miles on it and is being offered for $8K.

The woman selling it has kind of a complex story about it but basically, according to her, the original buyer went to jail soon after buying it and it sat in a police impound lot for 3 years. It was eventually auctioned off and sold again after that.

Everyone knows it's bad to let cars sit around for so long, but would a new car be likely to weather something like that?

Also, if anyone who could run a carfax would be willing to look, the VIN is 5PENL42N82Z892563.

You know its been abused by all owners... right?
What do you think they do in an impound? Sit for 3 years? They do drive them, or start them... I think they pass it off by "maintaining the vehicle in opperating condition"

Well he ran a carfax and not surprisingly, he's going to pass. Thanks for the opinions, guys.

I guess so. LOL. The Tacomas are excellent little trucks though. Typically, if this had of been a garage kept truck, with low miles like this, that price would have been a steal- especially it had of been 4wd. Toyotas hold their resell values extremely well.

Setting 3 years probably would not have hurt it. I have let my 1989 Pontiac station wagon set for 2-3 years at a time and never had an issue going in it again, save for new battery and oil changes. No, its not good to let a car set. I do not know why I do it. I do try to start it at least every couple of months and move it around so.

For $8k, I would have bought it. It probably would have started right up with a fresh oil change and tank of gas.

Wow, it's surprising to see this thread resurrected.

The reason my brother in-law (no longer future, now current) passed is that according to the state of California, it has a salvage title. The woman selling the car swore up and down that wasn't true, though. My memory of this is a little fuzzy now, but the gist was that her story and what appeared to be the facts about the truck were greatly at odds.

There's lots of cars out there so he decided to keep looking. I think he wound up getting a Subaru wagon.
