My 24 hours with a Cayman

My 24 hours with a Porsche Cayman

Wow, I guess cars have come a long way in 19 years. I always used to be of the opinion that you could never have too much horse power. Not sure I believe that any more. The Cayaman has some where around 325-350 or so. I could get into a whole lot of trouble with that. A 911 turbo with 500? Hell, just put me in San Quintin right now and save us all a lot of grief.

Porsche had an invite only auto cross day at a parking lot with the Cayman. The day I went it was pouring rain. I figured it would be a dud. Never knew traction control could work so well with out being intrusive. We were doing high speed figure 8’s, 90 degree turns, slaloms and the car would not really intervene till it thought you crossed the ‘stupid dumb a$$’ line. And even then it only popped you on the side of the head and said, not a good idea, how about we do it this way? Never did any auto crossing before and after a few laps it occurred to me that you could kind of drive it with more gas pedal and less brake. Then they let me take it home for a night hoping I would come back and buy one. Hello Porsche. Have you seen my pay stub lately?

Anyway, on with the Porsche. It was a dark metallic gray with two-tone black/gray leather. 6 speed manual. OH MY GOD! It was fun to drive. I did not so much get in the car as put it on. Everything was where it was supposed to be. I’m 6’3" and I fit very well. Could have used a little more legroom but I would not kick it out of the garage if I was offered one. The 6 speed was silky smooth. Clutch take up was predictable. The car followed my brains directions. Brakes? Who the hell uses brakes in a Porsche? If I saw a hole in traffic, it went to the hole. If I saw a turn, it went to the turn. I thought I was driving a full sized go-cart. Over passes that I take at 75-80 in my MB can be taken at 90-100 ---? With out a second thought. Nice ride, seats seemed like they would be comfy for a cross-country jaunt. The wipers adjust speed with the vehicle speed. The radio adjust volume with the vehicle speed (hey, my MB does not have fancy ***** like that). I shed a tear when I had to give it back. OH did I mention that it looked really really nice sitting in my garage next to my wife’s Volvo T5?

Now if I could just manage to convince someone to give me $75k plus TTL I would be a really happy man.

I love the looks of the Cayman. I thought they had under 300 horsepower though. I have only seen a couple... how did the one you drive sound, because one I saw on the street had a horrible exhaust note, kind of like a 2 stroke scooter or something! It didn't sound Porsche-like at all.

The next-best thing after buying the car is influencing people by offering an honest, positive review. In addition to this site you'll probably talk to other folks. I think we all pretty well trust your opinion, so Porsche got some compensation.

I envy you, lucky bastard! I'm putting you on the list with Ted.

You should have told the you weren't sure if it was enough car for you and did they have a Spyker you could put through the paces...

"We're talking about the Spyker, a car so detailed and intricate that it takes months just to build one model, a car that has not a single piece of plastic in any of its components."

Me, too

I got an invitation to do that. I don't need anymore discontent in my life, though. My pay stub is pitifully inadequate for such a purchase, too, so I passed. It is a fine-looking car, though.

Maybe after they've been out long enough to show up in the used car ads . . .

The Caymen is really one cool looking car.

I have to agree though, new cars are almost to fast! I'm with you give me a 500hp 911 and I'll be in jail withing 24 hours.

According to the Porsche web site it packs 295 hp @ 6,250 rpm.

Too be quite honest, I do not recall much about the engince sound. I guess that means at the very least that it did not sound offensive or weak to my ears but it did not have the appeal of big block V8 or a Ferrari at full scream. It sounded like it was supposed to sound I guess. Granted, I had the windows down and radio cranked while I was driving.

Yes Bot they may get their moneys worth from me blabing about how much I want one, but most of us are too poor to afford one so unless porsche lives on dreams, not too sure how much they made off of me. BTW, love you too Bot

I think as far as bang for the buck goes, the porsche is a pretty good deal. Everting inside had a nice solid expensive feel. The fit and finish was, well crap its a Porsche, how do you think it was? If I was single, give me that, my dog and I will take care of the rest

I'll be back later. I'm having a Porsche flash back and I need a moment alone.

That porsche is a weird thing. For some reason nobody seems to be able to keep them on their own side of the road. I think it's something to do with the shape of the wings.

When you look inside, it's about the same size as a normal car, you have to ask "What's the point?"
