R.I.P. Hummer H1

General Motors announced today that they are going to stop selling the original Hummer H1. The AM General plant that makes the H1 is going to shift back over to making only the Humvee military version.

GM will continue to manufacture the H2 & H3 knockoff versions.

Where's Arnold going to buy his next car? He was the first civilian customer for the H1 back in 1992.

I drove an H1 one time and I can't see why anyone would want to own one unless they had a farm or something. They drive like a dumptruck!

Military fatigues are not as comfortable as regular clothes. Yet you see a lot of people wearing boots, pants, etc, etc.

I beg to differ somewhat: BDU trousers are a lot more comfortable if one has a more or less normal body shape. When I do field work I wear the trousers because they're comfy and resistant to thorns and dry quickly.

The shirts kind of suck. I like lighter material probably because of where I live and work. I don't wear any of the rest of the uniform. Okay, I have a pair of jungle boots which are absolutely the best footwear for where I work.

I don't wear any part of the uniform in town because I think it is mildly disrespectful of the people in the militaryto wear parts of the uniform in which they take pride in proper appearance. Also I prefer to blend into a crowd rather than stand-out.

Wonder if this signifies the end of an era for the super-sized street SUV?

There was an article in the March issue of Mercedes Enthusiast on the G55.

Nice ride.

There is a Caddy/Hummer dealer near where I live. I was once talking to a salesman who told me that they couldn't keep the H1 in stock. Seems like no one wanted the smaller Hummer.

Go figure.

I agree! There's several others as well, but not as cool as the G wagon. Still, fuel prices have to influence all but the most indifferent of consumers and make for a powerful dissuasion, and with that goes the incentive to build these shining symbols of urban arrogance. Oh for the simple days when personal power was a v8 and cheap fuel provided the keys to freedom. Seems like only yesterday...

I would rather have my own small road course and a few shifter carts.

This was really awfully wide to be driven on the street, much less to park. It was cool, though.

Thank God! now let's await the attrition of the cursed Denalis and Yukons, not to mention Excrements or Excursions or whatever.

I'm so thrilled I'm gonna shoot off my Tanegashima with 90 grains of FFG!!!!!!

I would too. But I would also have a G55 to drive around it too.

That would be the tow vehicle for my trailer load of shifter carts.
