Lawn's Ant Control Opinions

Would anyone care to share their opinion on a cost effective product to spead on my five acre lawn to diminish the ant population? They seem to be doing a number on the grass (roots or blades). Thanks.
Steve

Used to use Diazion, sp?, and it worked great so naturally they took it off the market. Last year we had a column of ants coming from up in the woods, right to our house. I followed the column into the woods and found their nest about 100 yards from the house. They certainly will travel. Poured every insecticide I had on hand into and around their lair and put the hurts to them because all activity stopped and has not resumed since. I just checked the nest last week and no activity. If you can track down their nest it gives you an advantage. Carpenter ants get into the house and it can be a REAL big deal. My wife freaks out when she sees an ant anywhere near the house.

I can't get Diazonon here and don't now if that's a state restriction. Last two years been using Spectracide with favorable results. Cost are running $9 per 5,000 sq ft. Bayer is a good product but you will go broke if you are trying to broadcast cover on a large lawn. Spot treating like they reccommend is super for small lawns.

Are you sure it's ants and not grubworms doing the damage? We get fire ants here. Nuisance pests with their large mounds, but no actual threat to the turf. Grubs DO feed on roots. Had grubs do a real number on our yard in KC, and we only discovered them when a sprinker installer showed them to us where he dug...

What store do you buy that from?

Being in NH, the grass is a mix. Part of my lawn was pasture years ago, so . . . as to what type of ants . . . not fire ants, not carpenter ants but I don't know technically which they are.

Yes, the five acre portion and doing the math on bags that cover 5,000 SF enters into my equation. 43,560 SF per acre x 5 acres = mucho bags of treatment. I am simply looking for the best bang for the buck.
Thanks,
Steve
