Negotiating Saudi customs...sexual hysteria at the border

Drivers of 18 wheelers going into Saudi Arabia are subjected to the strictest searches for contraband, as liquor and pornographic magazines and pork are prohibited from being imported into the kingdom.

One British driver had the misfortune to attempt to have the Saudi customs officials discover a package of Walls' best back bacon in his lunch box.
The customs officer had a small bonfire started, and the bacon was burnt up on the spot. "Damn near made me cry, a lovely fry up it was, and I couldn't eat any"

Another customs officer discovered, deep inside a trailer, a box marked with stencils that DEFINATELY came within the Saudi definition of Pornography, a stencil of a plastic blow up inflatable rubber woman, with "pubic hair so real you can not tell the difference"

To those who saw this incident, and were not inclined to dismiss it as having not actually happened,

the enraged Saudi customs official immediately arrested the driver, confiscated the cargo, had the container opened, the offending sex doll
inflated, stood up against a wall, and SHOT !!!

(See COLA COWBOYS, Franklyn Wood, 1984) It is NON fiction. Should be required reading for those who think Saudi Arabia is just our big dumb gas station

At the present time, true. Just remember that a thousand years ago stupidity and Christianity were best buddies. A Catholic friend of mine remarked that all young religions go through this phase. I would add that they do so only if they are successful enough to gain dominance in some area, as Christianity and Islam have both done.

I personally don't care if you want to eat a ham sandwich and wash it down with a beer before looking at some porn or renting a prostitute; or keep a vegetarian diet; abstain from alcohol or even caffiene; never look at an unrelated woman unless she's wearing a veil; smoke pot, snort coke, inject heroin, drop acid, play the slots, drive a Ford Explorer, or not-as long as you don't try to force your ways on me. But then, I'm agnostic (caps intentionally not used), and we've never been the dominant (non)religion.

Narrow-mindedness is so sad . . .

No matter where it is or what religious cloak it may be wearing. I find it ironic that the US is fighting the narrow-minded, intolerant, pin-headed Muslim fundamentalists in other countries while at the same time we race to duplicate the same attitude right here at home.

I am sad to see the Republican (my party, by the way) majority in congress and in the White House become ever more intolerant and willing to abridge civil liberties left and right. All the while we decry these same attitudes among friends (Russia) and foes, alike.

I guess that old adage that says "Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely," is as true today as it ever was.

Yes, it really happened (in 1983). Taking 18 wheelers to Saudi Arabia was, and is, business, despite the obstacles. It makes for entertaining reading too'
Amazing things happened in the trip going through East Europe and Turkey too, which he describes in the book!

Had a friend who was a restuarant manager. He had problems with islamic employees taking food that was not authorized per employee policy. He noticed the soup was a prime target of their efforts. He changed the recipe of the potato soup to include massive amounts of bacon and pig fat. (hey, he is a CIA grad, they love their butter/fats) Gave it a couple weeks that way and told ALL emplyees the truth/status. Kept loss to a minimum after that.... Not saying its right or wrong, just that is was effective.

Hate mail too....Botor
