e-bay......again

I purchased a set of wheels on e-bay for a total of $26.00. The seller wants $120. to ship them. Since I live nearby, I choose to pick them up.

Seller states that he is not obligated to allow a pickup, even if this fact is not disclosed in the auction.

He further states that he will allow a pickup for a "pickup fee" of $30.00.

Is this an attempted extortion of an additional $30.00 or is he permitted to charge a pickup fee, with an amount of his choosing, without disclosing same in the auction?

The question is regarding the e-bay rules.......not whether you are in agreement with either myself or the seller.

Sounds like he may have planned on making the bulk of his profit from shipping to begin with, otherwise he wouldn't mind a local pickup. If he wasn't going to allow that, it should have been stated in the auction. I would do a user information request and call him over the phone and try to reason with him. I've had great success with this method in the past - people tend to be pretty bold and rude hiding behind a user ID but when you get them on the phone or in person they often cave.

Bold.......rude........and insulting........when I attempted to point out this fact to him via e-mail.

I've offered him $20.00..........that's as much as I'm prepared to do.

Just curious as to the e-bay rules on the matter.

The fact he did not specificly say no local pickups works for you. Ask Eskimo..he does a lot of Epray sales.

Ebay states "ask all questions before bidding", if you would have inquired about shipping or pickup then you would have known. I've learned that when a seller doesn't state shipping charges or terms, it's usually not a good sign.

A set of wheels for $26? Were they MB? If they are worth a total of $56 bucks, pick them up that way he can't get you for non paying bidder, then leave a scorching negative feedback. He will reciprocate, but then leave a scorching rebuttle. If you have a alot of good feedback and are rated 97% + and your score can sustain a bad hit then accept it and move on. If your mostly a buyer not that big of deal, if he's mostly a seller then he will bear the consequences much more than you. But remember, ask before you bid.

There's a link at the bottom of this page to report an excessive shipping/handling violation. I'd start by reporting the seller.

I deliberately did not inquire because the excessive shipping charge clearly indicates that he wants to make a good profit on the shipping. So, he would have clearly disallowed a pickup.

I was banking on the fact that he stated nothing in the listing.

In any case, I settled it with him for $20.00. Four W126 15 hole wheels for $46.00 is not worth the time to argue the principle of it........especially with an *********.

Just my opinion,

(mostly having bought T shirts, stamps, and small things)
try to get the whole price including shipping worked out first.
For next time....

For this time, if it was me, I would just pay the $30 p/u fee and get the things...and move on....not worth the trouble to make a federal case out of it. But that is just me. I wouldn't deal with someone like that.

I do check the feedback pretty carefully before I bid and that has served me well, (or I have been just damn lucky!) and have found the sellers, even in Germany and UK, to be 100% honest.

It is a great marketpace and I enjoy it.

I wish you the best, and hope you tell us how it gets resolved in the end.

I was bidding on those. I had my bid at $50 but decided there was way too much curb rash. Changed it to ~$11 and was glad I didn't win!

There is an eBay provision about charging pennies for the product and large shipping charges, but AFAIK it only serves to end the auction. If you bid the assumption is that you agree to the shipping charges.

Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Thanks.

I paid him the $46. for them. We'll see what they look like. Hopefully, they'll clean up with a bead blast and paint. Might even consider a powder coat system since I've got three sets of them now.

Actually, he only got $26. He had a $120.00 shipping charge. Probably cost no more than $75 to ship all four. So, he makes another $45.00 on the shipping.

That's why he wanted to "do me a favor" and allow me to pick them up for $30.00

We settled on $20. to pick them up. It wasn't worth further argument.

Don't worry Brian I will do you a favor and only charge you $20 as well to pick up that 303.

This guy may be on to something, "pick up fees"!

Well, one set is for the SD, the second set is for a W124 with a 49 offset and this is the third set. I'll see the condition after I get them. You might be right.........one of those wheels looks unserviceable.
