Single Malt Listing

I have the single malt bug.

My List

Favorite Scotch:
Laphroaig 10 Year
http://www.laphroaig.com/

Runner up:
The Macallan 12 and 18 Year
http://www.themacallan.com/splash.asp

Maybe the best overall:
Redbreast
(single malt done by the Irish)

I can't pick between the Redbreast and Laphroaig 10 Yr. The tastes are completely different and it all depends when I am enjoying them. Some of my more schooled scotch drinking friends won't drink the Irish whiskey. More for me. Any recommendations?

Your choices are unreproachable, but I prefer Oban. Maybe because it's easy to say? I just looked at online prices and I was very surprised to see that my local retailer is better priced than the 2 online retailers I checked.

I

will give Oban a try. I read a little about it here
http://www.scotchwhisky.com/english/about/malts/obab.htm

Good friends hooked me and they have good taste. I am looking forward to trying some different brands.

It's an expensive habit (like Mercedes) so the more recommendations, the better!

And here.

A friend told me about a distillery and brewery tour of Scotland. That would be fun.

Sorry, can't help you. I've only drank scotch twice in my life and bad things happened both times. Now just the smell of it makes me sick.

A nice Makers Mark Manhatten on the other hand

In the decanter, daily drink = Macallan 12 yr

Special, late-night, stressed out, gut-burner = Macallan Cask Strength

Warm, winter fire = Laphroaig

The malt I use to try and convert "scotch-haters" with = The Balvenie, Double Wood, 10 yr. For some reason (two casks?), this malt is very smooth, rounded and approachable. If someone says they can't stomach scotch, I give them a bit of this with a touch of water. If they like it (most seem to), I then move on to the rest of the usual suspects.

The rest in the cupboard = Glenmorangie, McClelland's, Glenfiddich.

I think my favorite to date was/is a 15-yr Macallan.

Never tried Redbreast, I think I'll have to look it up. I love the malts on your list, only thing I could suggest since you enjoy the Macallan is the cask strength version they released. It's a kicker!

I recently returned from a trip to North Carolina. Picked up a bottle of the Macallan, 12 yr for $42 at the local ABC store. With the current exchange rate, that's about $46 CDN. Back home here in Ontario that same bottle would cost me $80 CDN!

hehe. Anytime you visit up North, you're welcome to stop by for a glass or dozen! Not many of my friends enjoy scotch, so I always enjoy the company!

The Macallan 18

Great recommendations here. Glad to see there is someone else out there enjoying Laphroaig. Who has ten grand to throw at whiskey?

I have some family in Ireland and have clearance from the boss to go over and visit one of these years. I want to go to the distillery and have Redbreast straight from the pot. It really is a fantastic drink.

What a great day. My brother in law bought a bottle of The Macallan 18yr. It cost him something in the neighborhood of $115 US. When he popped the cork, it made the whole room smell of whiskey. It was a great drink. We drank it neat with a couple drops of water in it. I have a little buzz from it now. Perfect way to wind down on the weekend.

Give the Redbreast a try at some point and let me know what you think. I get to Ottawa once a year. Maybe I'll bring some with me.

Sully, thanks for the heads-up concerning Redbreast. Your message was the first I'd heard of it. The only Irish whiskies I've tried are Bushmills' and Jameson's. That's all I have seen for sale here, though I admit that I haven't looked. I'm still a newbie when it comes to Scotch and found the two Irish whiskies I mentioned rather bland in comparison. I heard or read that the Irish double distill theirs and the Scotches are distilled once?

However, given that you like Laphroaig (which I like a lot), I'm sure I'd like the Redbreast. Ah, happy hunting!

Am I alone when I say that I accually preffer the $8 for a 24 pack Milwalkies Finest to any other alchols???

Mainly because...
Its cheap
Its easy to get
You only need to taste the first 4, then they just keep going and going

If cops pull you over, they might ask for one, to remind them of their poor days (wishfull thinking)
