Sixto

Sixto, didn't that particular diesel engine have problems and had to be pulled off the US market?

At least that is what someone told me while I was looking for our '89 300TE.

Normally the last year of a production run would be the better car.

I suppose that it is a matter of engine preference; M103 vs. M104.

IMO the year of production for a W124 wagon doesn’t matter much at this point, but the service history and overall condition of the vehicle matters a lot. IIRC MB changed headlight design from the functionally dismal to tolerable in about ’94 along with the other face-lifted components.

I’ve been looking for the ’87 diesel version, but they are very rare and all I’ve seen have 100K miles or typically many many more miles on the odo.

Somewhere between a few and one too many of the 86-87 6 cyl Diesel engines didn't survive overheating. Still, I think it was a marketing decision that doomed the 300TD in the US. The 6 cyl Diesel engine introduced in the US in 90 had much bigger problems than the engine in the 87 300TD and that later engine was sold through 95.

Later model wagons will have ammenities and features not available in earlier models. If you need a passenger side airbag and traction control then focus on later models.
