Cars bound for North America were typically "fully loaded" for the market here. Cloth interiors were probably as popular as manual transmissions and crank windows.

MTI is right.

The Mercedes marketing gurus determined early on that American customers didn't feel an S class was a Mercedes unless it had leather "leder" seats.

Worldwide, all W126 cars had electric windows, and not much else standard. Velour
and Amaretta seats are almost impossible to find, in non gray market trim.
Even airconditioning was an option in Euro SEC coupes. The entry level 420SEC Euro coupes (never sold here in USA) came with plastic hubcaps.

You will have to buy a pair of fitted sheepskin covers (I did) for that feel.
I used Ramshead (factory near you in Sonoma Ca.) well. I think Andre is still doing that business. Haven't seen him in years, he was from Austria, also did a Volvo for me, he had a yellow W116 SD with over 400k miles; a great guy, top quality work, he can rotate (they are custom fitted) the covers in a few years, recommend dry cleaning them. They last a long time!!

But the SEL/SDL is tough to maneuver/park in Chinatown/NorthBeach/W. Portal, etc. also. Maybe you should stick with W123 diesel

Best wishes in the search.

Could be but that's an authentic pattern. Must have wanted fabric more than I do to get matching door panels.

I don't know the 560 so well -- are those seat heater switches below the ashtray?

On the same interior note, I found a guy in Sebring, Florida where we have a house who says he will do my SDL seats in MB Tex for 600.00 All four including the headrests.

Seems like a deal to me, I will let all concerned how it works out.

If he does good work it's well worth it.

Here's a close look at what the real velour seats look like

www.ebay.de "auto und motorrad" ebay item number 4641483451

It is, by the way, a 1988 560SE, the ultra rare SWB gas car with the big motor. (I believe there was only about 1200 or so produced, and most went to Belgium, France and Germany) This one has clear blinkers on the front, goofy exhaust tips, a nice burl wood gearshift aftermarket knob, and a floor mounted fire extinguisher (may be aftermarket one)

The gray velour upholstery, and door inserts, can be clearly seen, as well as the piping on the headrests and seats, and the map pockets on the seatbacks can be seen also. All good for a point of reference.

I think it looks real nice, better than the "mouse fur" velour seats of the American big three luxury cars from the 1970s and 1980s.

I did see a SDL for sale here in Houston with a velour interior once. It felt very nice, nice vehicle overall, they wanted a premium price for it, it was being sold by Ronnie Jackson Mercedes. Ronnie Jackson reconditions old Mercedes-Benzes and sells them. He's got some nice looking models on his lot, will make any fan of older MBs drool.

Because I am not selling mine!!!

Not many SDL's with cloth around, probably only a handfull. Frankly I have seen a ton of SDL's and mine is the only one with cloth I have ever come across. And yes it is original I have the print out from MB to prove it.
