Cheese Steak.

Just in Philly over the weekend and I have a question.

Which do like better and why? (Don't forget the why!)

Geno's or Pat's?

Do they make them differently?

snp8990 05-23-2006 03:54 PM

Genos is good,I like how they make it.
The slab of meat of the side and all the toppings on the other side, and the speed of it.There is also another place by Geno's called Jim's thats very good.Personally I thought Jim's was the best.

Best Philly anywhere is at Charley's in the Atlanta Hartsfield airport.....sounds nuts, but I travel alot and try them everywhere.

Heresy!! ;)

I used to always go to Geno's when I lived in the area. Actually, though, I thought the best cheesesteaks I ever had were at a little place in Ocean City, NJ that no longer exists. You could get them with hot peppers and they were actually hot! Man, they were good.

I've never been to this place in Atlanta you're talking about, but in general Philly cheesesteaks are not something to be ordered outside of the general Philly area, in my experience. You never know what you will get.

you might consider checking with a cardiovascular surgeon to find out how soon before he has to split your sternum, pull your ribs outta the way and scrape that philly cheesesteak outta your heart.

Very true. That's the first cheese steak I've had in about 5 years. Although today I'm working late (goddamit!) and didn't go running like I would have like (goddamit!)

Dammit!

:D

Ara T. 05-24-2006 01:51 AM

I've never had a cheesesteak.. sounds tasty.

Larry Delor 05-24-2006 09:32 PM

I am told that Pat's is better, but no particular reason was given.

Apparently a cheese option is: Cheez Whiz

(White House subs in Atlantic City has the best cheese steaks - provolone only) corner of Arctic and Mississippi Ave's

Plantman 05-25-2006 08:13 AM

YOu could make them yourself a lot better than any of those if you like to cook.

It's not rocket science or rebuilding a transmission.

You what I remember from the philly/jersey?

Italian sausage heroes.

Italina bread, fried sausage, grilled onions and peppers, fried potates slices, ketchup, mustard....

Now that's a heart stopper.

Glad I moved or I'd weigh 300 lbs.....:1blank:

GottaDiesel 05-25-2006 09:54 AM

Moderation... Moderation...

I saw how they make those on TV one night. It cured me of ever wanting to eat one of them. I'd rather just eat lard out of a bucket with a spoon.

Waiting for an ellevator in the east end of Pittsburgh today I heard the name 'Jim's' mentioned by a plus sized woman she then went on to tell her co-worker that Geno's was even better... imagine that... never been, myself, though.

But the lard doesn't come with onions!

Don't Worry, Be Happy.

Fellas, trust me on this, there's a whole lot of life left after quintuple bypass surgey. (15 & counting)

So, what'll it be? fried or plain onions?

:D :D

iwrock 05-25-2006 08:06 PM

Pat's all the way. Cheese whiz is the standard cheese, but i have to get the white american to make it right. Jim's is on South street, and is the best thing in the world after a night out bar hopping. Just be prepared to wait in line with the other drunks. :P

PS. Pats is the cheesesteak place Rocky gets his at in the first Rocky movie.

Skippy 05-27-2006 10:54 PM

My parents are from Philly, and I was born in Bristol, PA, but we moved when I was still a baby. Mom has a lot of good to say about Pat's. She's never mentioned Geno's. I've never been to either.

I tried the attempted cheese-steak at U.S. Sub Base in Carson City this morning. I've been in and around Philly and south Jersey enough to know a good cheese-steak when I have one. This wasn't it. The bread was tasty, but a little too soft, the meat was ok. They scrimped on the cheese, and it appeared to be American. They shorted me on the onions, and the thing was totally lacking in grease. The good cheese-steaks I've had in the Philadelphia area used provolone cheese, hard crust bread, plenty of fried onions (I have them hold the peppers), and are greasy as all get out.

Yeah, but that was an example....

I didn't exactly have the time to make a philly cheese steak, and take a pic of it, so I just pulled the first one I could find!!!

rcs2jr 08-10-2006 12:46 PM

must order in english

Joe Vento has gotten blasted locally for his "im american & speak english" quote that is posted at the location. He even sells shirts with that for $5.00. By the looks of that corner in south philly it isnt hurting buisness one bit. We stopped in friday night and he had considerable more people than pat's. I think they are both good and can also hit many places in the area as good.:D

Mistress 08-10-2006 12:53 PM

Never had one, maybe it would be worth a road trip. PBS did a special on sandwhiches thoughout the US and they featured both Pat's and Genos.

MTI 08-10-2006 01:10 PM

Pat's King of Steaks: CheeseWhiz, grill that flows grease like an MG

Genos: Provalone, less grease

Which is better? Try both.

It's not nice to tease us.....

gmercoleza 08-10-2006 01:54 PM

Was in Philly a couple weeks ago. Had Geno's, it was pretty good. Didn't try Pat's. The line was wrapped around Geno's, but only 5 or 6 people in line at Pat's. Whatever you do, don't get a cheese steak at the Phillies game - horrible, even the vendor said so!

Mistress 08-10-2006 01:58 PM

Chemical warfare, a gascious expulsion from a philly cheese steak.

GottaDiesel 11-28-2006 01:15 PM

Well... all I can say is FORGET the Pat's or Geno's debate.

Honest. They both S*U*C*K.

Go to Jim's on South Street.

Amazing! :) :) :)

I have to add that the cajun version is much, much better than that bland anglo-african crap. I don't remember the French name for it but if you ever want to slow-down the blood running through your heart muscle, go to the Best Stop in Cankton, LA. Well, suburban Cankton, anyway.
