It's fixable

I used to spend a lot of time on a site devoted to Ford Crown Vics, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car. A lot of these cars were "geezerized" either by dealers or by the original owners. The nasty tops can be removed, though not without considerable effort to achieve the desired result of making it look as though the car were always a slicktop. Oversized/gaudy wheels are easy to get rid of.

Where does this freaking look come from? I mean, what are its origins, historically speaking, in automobiledom? I wonder what the first vinyl top was, and who thought it looked good? Same for the "fake convertible" look. I've seen a lot of Chrysler 300's that have been given the treatment. Not so many MB's. Sad.

It isn't really geezerized...its ghettoized...I go to school in Camden, NJ (see how tough I am?) and this treatment is common among the thugs. It'd be hard to walk into a Saturn dealership to buy a MB...

I never figured out about this kind of thing. Terrible to think it happened to a Benz.

The phenomenon on American cars - seen on Lexus and some others, too, seems especially prevalent in the Boston and Florida area, but also everywhere else where good taste may be lacking.

The full boat package includes not only the fake convertible or carriage treatment, but the "gold package", gilded hood ornament, door and trunk handles, marque badge, wheel arches, and a pretentious name in script usually on the C pillar, ugh!

Sort of a pimp my ride look. Not for me.

I have no idea why this appeals to, but it turns my stomach! I would suspect the people who do it liked white belts and shoes back in the '70s, and love gold cahins, around their necks, watchbands of gold, to show off with the car.

To steal a line from the great Dolly Parton - It probably took a lot of money to make that car look that cheap.

Dang, I thought of that idea just a couple days ago too... Vinyl topping stuff that didnt come that way, thinking there would be a market, but after that, some things are more important than money.

Hmm...

I saw a town car today, and thought 'that E class is trying to hard to be that car.'

A lil off topic, but I am planning to make a Mercedes meet at Sacramento Raceway. Would you be cool with something like that?

Justin, the lastest edition of The Star magazine (MBCA mag) lists a 1986 350TE AMG wagon.

The owner states that the wagon was privately imported into the US, that it is in "decent condition" and he is inviting people to "make an offer."

The wagon is located in Redondo Beach, CA.

You need to make a trip down here and add it to your collection.
