Cadillac Escalade "most stolen" vehicle

Per news articles this date,

It gives GM a dubious status bump,

Wheels on them can go for $10,000 per set, on the black market

I guess this is because this tarted up GMC Yukon, not a great SUV by any means, has special cachet with the rappers/footballers/bling-bling people and the Cadillac name means conspicuous wealth, like gold chains and diamond encrusted wristwatches, and a lifestyle to be admired (See "DUB" magazine etc.)

It's an OK machine but not spectacular for anything...

The Lexus is high on the list for its headlights and other parts.....

and some body shops always are looking for Camry and Accord airbags, always a need for them....

With all the money these people put into it,I would just grab a G500 or G55.That car,in my opinion, makes you look like a "big dog".

I'll tell you how popular they are amongst car thieves, they stole mine before I even thought I wanted one!

Cadillac used to be the standard of the world. My how times have changed. The Escalade is no different than the '80s Cimmanon J-car, except that Escalades sell like hotcakes for big bucks. Anyone can lease a Escalade, that doesn't mean they have any money. It's just like the motorcycle craze, anyone can walk into a Harley dealership and ride away with zero down and 72 month terms, and roll the leather jacket and other goodies right into the monthly payment. Big deal.

What's there for a baby-boomer to do in Amsterdam?

Whatever happened to being low key? Most people that have real money live in simple neighborhoods and drive cars that blend in. I have yet to see anyone driving one pay for a fuel fillup with anything other than a credit card. I am more impressed when I see someone paying cash to fill up a '87 Impala.

I guess that depends on what you call "real money". Around here, there are lots of homes in the $3 - 10 mil range. I figure if you own one, that's real money enough for me. Oh, and Hummers and Escalades are everywhere -- it's like some awful disease...

If I saw a guy paying cash to fill up a 20 year old Chevy, I'd figure he probably couldn't get a credit card.

Yeah, you ol' fart, what do you think you're gonna do about it? Go back to the bong and beer.

PS I swear someday Mrs B's gonna turn her back (or lose her will to resist my constant pleading and whining) and I'm going to Amsterdam.

You would be surprised, many people that drive twenty year old cars and pay cash for fuel can probably walk into a MB dealership and stroke a check for anything they have on the lot.

About those people living in multi-million dollar homes...they don't really own the house, they have probably a interest only fifty year mortgage. All those fancy suv's are probably leased. Everything in the US is sold on the basis of a monthly payment. They need a heloc to buy anything that they can't charge on Visa. At least the guy filling up the Chevy has cash, and isn't using a credit card to make it from month to month. Carrying a balance on a credit card means you are working for the banks. Keeping up with the Jonses carries a high price.

People forget that people actually used to OWN things, instead of making perpetual payments to the bank or whomever. Anyone can make a monthy lease payment, while the money lasts. I'm sure that somewhere out there, a enterprising(sp) person has begun to lease Rolex and Omega watches.

That's the difference between old money and new money. Many people with old money don't want to stick out. People with new money tend to be ostentatious with it. A lot of the super wealthy types who have names you would recognize and 'summer cottages' in Newport, RI drive around in 80's Volvos. One man I knew to be worth over $130 million drove around in an old Explorer worth less than my car. I was shocked when someone casually mentioned how much money he had!

I have nothing that I don't own, and I believe that's probably true of many (perhaps most) of the folks around me that live in these homes. They aren't kids, and I assume they aren't stupid (but I've been wrong before). Many of the lay-low wealthy types in AZ have two-comma homes up north in obscure areas that can't be found without a compass and some mind altering drugs. The AZ town with the highest number per capita two-comma homes is Payson. All you'll see as you drive through is a run-down, dingy downtown area and some trailer parks. Interesting place...
