The collectivized mind of the internet

The greater the consensus, the stupider the result.

The great thing about the Internet is that I can look something up on, say, Wikipedia, and then verify the info. within minutes with numerous other sources that may be more legit.

If it were something important to me, I would never take Wikipedia at its word with no corroboration. But it's a nice resource to have if you want a certain type of info., something that could be considered geenral knowledge, fast.

I think this guy may be a little paranoid. Sure, some people will look at something like Wikipedia without a second thought as to its accuracy, but most people, or at least reasonably intelligent people, are going to try and verify the accuracy before using that info. for some important purpose. The writer even states that reporters have been asking him about his film making. He seems to take this as an indication that they immediately believe what they read online, but maybe they don't and are trying to verify. That's their job and he shouldn't be surprised they would ask about it.

And anyway, what's the danger here? That students' papers will be riddled with inaccuracies?

The hive can be as dumb as it wants. It doesn't mean we have to pay attention to it.
