will hogs ear humans?

today at lunch i said that hogs would kill and eat humans under some circumstances.

i was challanged and had to admit i didnt have proof. other than the old saying "he went to sh$t and the hogs ate him" and vague memories of warnings about the hogs on my grandfathers farm.

i finally said that perhaps that is what adults told small children to keep them out of the hog pen.

so anybody have facts about this strange topic?

tom w

ps i meant eat in the title

It was in those "Silence of the Lambs" books. Has to be true, pigs will eat anything...

Oy sure as 'ell 'ope they can 'ear us mate, with a nasty disposition loike that... wouldn't want to surprise one of the buggers...

I've heard of big hogs attacking and injuring people, don't know if it's gone as far as death and being eaten.

Hell, I saw a video of a deer attacking a hunter recently:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCDzM-dNY-8&search=deer%20attacks%20hunter

Not the best quality and the narration is in French. The deer put the hurt to that hunter.

actually there are a significant number of hunters killed by deer each year. a big buck in rut is nothing to tangle with.

most folks look at big fat hogs and see something akin to a stuffed animal, though.

Don't know about live people, but I've seen a lot of movie references to them eating dead people to dispose of the body. Check out "Snatch" (not what it sounds like and a fantastic movie if you haven't seen it) and "Deadwood" (anyone have seasons 1 or 2 they want to copy for me?)

I'll be damned. I guess I've led a sheltered life. I imagine they don't have those sharp knives attaced to their skull for nothing.

They would eat anything. (the last movie in the Silence of the lambs had a scene like that) You have to think too about how wild boar can be. I think animals are capable of eating about anything. I live here in Tucson and a few months back a lady in an adult living facility (alzheimers) had a portion of her arm eaten by a small lap dog. The lady has alzheimers and was asleep and didn't realize it was going on. the dog started by licking on a wound on the ladies arm and kept going. the lady died a few weeks later (she was close to 90 if I remember right) and they determined the injuries contributed to her death!

I was told that pigs can't turn their heads, so they can't get your leg/arm in their mouth as long as you are vertical, but if you fall down and get horizontal, all bets are off. Dunno if it's true....

I saw some "Wild Kingdom" type footage once of a leapord creeping up on some young wild boars who were maybe 30 40 yards away from the adults who were feeding nearby. The adults saw him before he could pounce and got up a pretty good head of speed before the leopard noticed them and started to flee. It was some amazing footage -- you could sorta tell the leopard had more speed but since the boars had gotten the jump on him they were closing in.

Just at the point the leopard was about to get away, one boar got his tail in his mouth and held on. Then about 3 or 4 boars crashed into the leopard and proceeded to do him damage. There was a furious scrum, dust flying, and suddenly, somehow, the leopard jumped about 6 feet up and 12 feet sideways and managed to get away. You could see a nasty crimp in his tail.

Not exactly killing and eating a person but I gained a new respect for the boar/pig family that day.

i read that in some areas, i thnk in the south, there are a significant number of feral pigs that are escaped domestics. they quickly revert to wild behaviour.

well, so far we have some interesting tales but not much in the way of a smoking gun.

oh yeah... snatch... a silly but very engaging movie. i have watched it five or six times. cant get enough of the "pikey" talk. my son and his buddies have watched it so many times they can say lines back and forth for quite some time.

bymemumuhperiwinklecaravan.

tommy whats that in your trousers? nothing. its a gun (a huge chrome revolver) what you going to do with that? its for defense. etc etc (the gun later turned out to be a nonfunction ing entity. but it was most impressive looking.

I do think that as the feral hog population explodes in the US there will be some problems.

I've been reading about that. Does sound pretty dicey. Major eco-damage and I imagine they could be a problem for people who inadvertently compete with them for habitat. Big problem in Cal., I hear it's bad in Florida and Hawaii as well. Found this good site about them, but the damn PDF doc is not well loaded -- have to work to read it, but it's got a good U.S. map showing the increase in this phenom.

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/animal_health/content/printable_version/feral%20pigs.pdf

I'll bet the buggers are not easy to hunt, and the article mentions you have to be damned careful while dressing them, and that you need to cook them really well. Normal with pork anyway, but I'm wondering if it's more dangerous with the wild ones. Apparently they breed like rabbits. I'd imagine hunting would only sorta keep the numbers down but never put a big dent in the problem.

Heh

Yes t_walgamuth! Snatch is a great movie.
When Brick Top Explains how to dispose of the bodies:
"Then when you got your six pieces, you gotta get rid of them, because there's no good in leaving it in a deep freeze for your mum to discover now is it? Then I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You gotta starve the pigs for a few days then the sight of a chopped up body would look like curry to a pissant. You gotta shave the head of your victim and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggy's digestion. You could do this afterwards of course but you don't wanna go sifting through pig ***** now do ya? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to do the job in one sitting so be weary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs two-hundred pounds in about...eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of un-cooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression: "as greedy as a pig."

well, i understand those who hunt the sixty pound wild pigs ( i am guessing on the weight) are pretty careful of the little buggers so imagine a domestic breed feral pig coming for you.

i would think a wild one would be safer than domestic for eating but that is just a guess. the triconosis worms they are famous for ...i dont know if they are found in the wild or not.

oh yeah, brick top....one of the more memorable characters from the movies. actaully that movie is all about characters. the action is pretty interesting too. some of it... the boxing scenes are pretty unlikely but still good clean (?) fun.
