You guys will, we like to have some of that money back that we pore in to all the other states.
But I have to tell you I never feel save standing in traffic under an overpass.

Yup and Lake Isabella dam will blow and rid the world of the awfulness that is Bakersfield. Meanwhile I'll have riverfront property just above the water on my hill. They've admitted that an earthquake would do it, but don't want to do anything to fix it.
If we're real lucky, nobody will rebuild LA. They'll move it to Nevada. |

I have thought about this in light of Katrina, and speaking with 'victims' of displaced NOLAns. I think there will be a catastrophic infrastructure problem for the Western and Midwestern states because of migration when it hits. Schools, public housing, police, ect......Glad there's a few states between me and CA.
I have a close friend in Redondo that has amassed quite a real estate operation in Manhattan Beach/Redondo/Santa Barbara consting mostly of apartment complexes from 10-25 units he built during the roaring '80s. They are paid for and generate income. For the last five years, he has been getting variances on these properties one at a time and levelling them, building several high end homes on each lot so he can cash out before an earthquake takes him out. |

Curt Gentry's novel, "The last days of the late, great state of California (1969) still makes for a great read...
I was living in San Francisco when the 1989 BIG quake hit, and that was real scary. A couple of friends were in their apartment drinking, afterwards and looking out at the dark city, said, imagine if the earthquake was a big giant sleeping under the city, and this was like it just moved slightly in its sleep. Imagine if it turned over. or WORSE, if it GOT UP!!!!

Don't worry Californians
Not to worry those of you living west of the SA fault. I understand Mike Brown is on his way out there now to supervise the emergency response team.

I cannot think of a good reason to move there.
Besides, with a Hurricane you have advance notice; with an earthquake you don't (not much anyway).

Whatever the disaster return rate, if nobody is holding you at gunpoint forcing you to stay, why should the rest of the country be saddled with picking up the pieces? I understand saving life and limb, but why compensate for property? Take the insurance money and move to somewhere where the Earth doesn't threaten to swallow you.
It's the Katrina argument applied to SoCal. |

I am tired of paying add'l taxes for every dumb yahoo who decides that living on the Gulf Coast, right on the path of Hurricane Express is such a great idea that they keep building and rebuilding and rebuilding. If someone wants to live on the Gulf, that's fine. Just don't expect me to pay to rebuild your house the next time a hurricane deposits your humble abode on the next county (or parish). Incidentally, the same goes for those who live in fire-prone, slide-prone, unstable hillsides (i.e., Malibu). the want to live there, that's fine, let them pay for fire services and other incidentals. Set up a special tax assessment to cover the next disaster. That's what insurance is for.
