Another good reason to wear a seatbelt

Warning - If yer squeamish, don't look.

Oh...not only does it give you a good reason to wear your seatbelt, it also gives you a good reason not to speed in your behemoth SUV while being chased by cops.

Yes, I am well aware of that, thank you. One more way the chronically cash-strapped, meddlesome District of Columbia can raise revenues to misappropriate.

Well, they are meddlesome because we made them meddle. We summoned the devil to do our bidding and now it wants it's due. We made it so that if a person has no means of payment is still covered so the insurance agency, in this case, the government, has to foot the bill. In order to make itself solvent, the insurance company can raise rates or cancel coverage. I got into an accident last week, well, the insurance co raises my rate. I get into an accident this week, raises rate again. Get into an accident next week, insurance pays and cancels me. Govt cannot cancel you or raise rates. What is it to do to minimize cost? Change your lifestyle. We asked for govt involvement and we got it. Now it want's it's due. Quit complaining and pay up. Can't have it both ways.

Amazing the sense of power we (me included) get from the power and speed of our machines. And just as amazing how quickly and unalterably that thing went out of control after clipping that smaller car.

This is of particular interest to me, as I was in a serious roll-over accident back in '72 when I was hitch-hiking. A wonder we survive some of our folly -- I was on my way to Pullman, WA, got picked up somewhere near North Bend by a bunch of hippies in a '60 Buick. A hippie much crazier than I had latched on to me. The previous car picked me up with him already on board and we were let out at the same spot. The guy was sniffing glue by the side of the road and was acting like he wanted to be my traveling companion.

I was wondering how I was going to ditch the guy when the Buick pulled over. It had 6 people already in the car. The guy had taken the back seat out and put in a platform with foam rubber and some tapestry, so we had 3 in the front and 5 in the back.

Somewhere near Ellensburg, we had a blowout doing around 75 I'd guess. The car started swerving and I could tell he wasn't going to get it under control. We hit a guard rail post and my field of view spun around violently. My life didn't pass before my eyes but I did have the thought that maybe I'd know soon if there really was life after death. My next sensation was a bright light.

I had come to rest on my side, sorta facing the sun. I tried to stand up and couldn't. It was a mixture of pain and an extreme feeling of fatigue. I was always curious what a video replay of the event would have looked like, and I just got a whiff of it.

In our case, there were 7 peoples flying out of the car, all except the driver, who had the car lifted off of him by about 10 guys, I heard -- two died, including the glue sniffer dude who was sitting next to the rear, right door -- I was next to him on his left. The guy sitting next to the right, front door was the other.

I had some cuts, scratches and many bruises. Gimped up for about 7 to 10 days.

Well, I have seen how seatbelts help and don't help. IMO, for the most part, it helps. However, I am not willing to mandate it. As I said before, the government does because we have made it responsible for our wellbeing from cradle to grave. While I wear mine, I can't see forcing someone to wear their's. When people get in my car, they can wear or not wear it. I'm not going to be the "seatbelt nazi" that will not drive till everyone is buckled in.

Cat, I don't consider failure to wear seatbelts a crime. It may be the law and not wearing them is, therefore, breaking the law. Still, it's not like robbing the Seven Eleven.

Also, as someone else has pointed out, crime really does pay pretty well. The better one is at it, the better it pays. Career criminals, mobsters, etc. often look at prison as "the cost of doing business" sometimes. If you make enough and manage it well enough, maybe the time is not so bad.

Either way, it is against the law. As long as the law is there, if you get caught, STFU and take the ticket before they write more things on it. Everything is "Yes, Sir" or "No, Sir"

Why do people like to compare it and say it is not as bad as this, that or the other. You broke the law, plain and simple. You are a lawbreaker. The punishment is not as severe as DUI but it is still breaking the law. Comparing it is kinda meaningless. Robbing a 7-11 is not as bad as murder which is not as bad as serial killing which is not as bad as mass murder, etc, etc.

Not wearing seat belts . . .

Hey, Aklim, it's not as bad as mass murder. What's the big deal?

I think that there should be a law which allows one to exempt oneself from things like wearing helments (on motorcycles), seat belts, etc. by signing a waiver. Once a person has done this, it would be like signing a Do Not Resuscitate order in the hospital. The EMT checks your license, sees the waiver, and then moves on to the next guy.

I'm not one of the people who believes it's our government's responsibility to protect me from myself. I find such a situation to be intrusive, demeaning, and obnoxious.

Anybody else feel this way? I know you're out there.

I don't think it is a big deal at all. I'm just saying that the action is illegal. Never sat right with me as far as comparing that this isn'at as bad as that or that or that. Just say it is illegal and if you are willing to pay the price and can live with it, go ahead.

Why have the EMT move on if you can pay? The only issue should be if you cannot pay.

Well, when you ask for the government to do this that or the other for you, it will come to bite you back in the ass sooner or later. However, when you make the government pay when you cannot, they have the right to step in and mind your business.

I feel that way. It's just that I am looking on the other side of the coin. The side where you have summoned the devil to do your bidding and now it want's it's payment.
