cause of Powerstroke engine noise?
 

What are the typical causes of a Powerstroke Diesel engine sounding like an older Diesel engine? Specifically this is a 95 E150, probably an export model.

If it is the 7.3L diesel, it could be air in the lines and oil. They have a hose that equalizes the pressure and it is supposed to make it quieter. This is known as the HPX or High Pressure Crossover. It connects the left and right side high pressure rails together. It gives you more even pressure and less spikes. Oil runs the injectors in the Powerstroke.

Also they have quick disconnects that are great for pressure but not vacuum. These quick disconnects are between the tank and pump, hence the vacuum. People have done things that makes the return line pump the fuel somewhere else in the tank and removed the quick disconnects altogether. AKA Harpooning the tank.

I've got the 97 F350 and I also put the HPX crossover on. It is designed to equalize oil pressure across the two banks of cylinders, especially that #8 on the rear drivers side. The noise is referred to as "cackle". Aklim has a point too on the air in the fuel lines. You can go through and change out the connectors, make them air tight, may relieve some of the noise. Or you could just go buy some god-awful giant exhaust, straight pipe it and drown out any other noise there might be.

Are you on FTE too?

This is why I am thinkin of bypassing the quick disconnects.
