What's funny is that I was at a duck hunting camp at the end of the earth and we were grilling and drinking, ect and the only thing the TV would pick up was that game. Everytime one of those four commentators would mention Cal or Southern Cal, I would start to laugh to myself because of your comment. The scurvey dogs I was with would say, "What are you lauging at?" and it was too much to explain so I just said I was drunk.:D

PS: What about CAL Tech?:D

That's right, I forgot about about Cal Tech.

There's just too many schools with the "Cal" word in it.

I don't understand how the college sporting world decided that one school, UC Berkeley, would get to be called "Cal".

I kind of understand the "Southern Cal" thing, even though I don't sympathize with it. My sales manager in Florida tells me that South Carolina State University is also called "SC", so probably USC is called Southern Cal to avoid the confusion.

My problem with that is the USC is a college football powerhouse, and has been since the early days of college football. South Carolina State University is not known for its college football program.

And.....since USC itself doesn't like to be called Southern Cal, and routinely sends notes to broadcasters not to call it Southern Cal, and since nobody in the Western U.S. refers to or will even understand which university Southern Cal is, they've earned the right to go by "SC" or at minimum "USC".

This discussion is getting me riled up again.

I might have to give this topic its own thread if I can't calm down. :D

Actually, South Carolina State University is an all black school that gained some notariety b/c that is where Strom Thurmond sent his black mistress' love children to school. You may be thinking of USC--The University of South Carolina;) [/QUOTE]

You know what's really funny--Louisiana has the same deal as California, as all State Schools are part of the Louisiana State University, ect..., but do you notice how ALL of the broadcasters refer to LSU as LSU and not 'Louisiana' or some such? Its all about respect, baby:D :D

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

There must be almost 2 dozen schools in California with the name "Cal" in it.

What did UC Berkeley do to get the name Cal?

What's funny is that "Cal" isn't even part of its name. It's called UC Berkeley, isn't it?

Another Fine Wednesday (before Thanksgiving)

Going to North Carolina tonight for Thanks giving with Miss Betsey. I hope all of you guys have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

See you next week!

My wife and I spent the better part of the day cleaning the house to get ready for Thanksgiving.

We're having three couples over and their kids. We're looking at eight adults and ten kids, age three years to sixteen.

In the early afternoon I went to the local nursery and bought a flat of pansies and 3 bags of mulch. I ended up cleaning out the flower beds leading up to our front door, amending the soil with 4.5 cubic ft. of Amend, and planting 36 little pansies.

When I was done and stood up, I noticed that my back was killing me. Took two Alleve, but it didn't dull the pain. Hope I can sleep tonight.

Should be another fine Thanksgiving day though. We have good friends, and we're split about 50/50 American and Japanese, so we'll have sushi along with the turkey.

after consuming way too many Holiday treats, it's off to the tread mill after work today......then three days of quiet and relaxing...

Dee8go 12-22-2006 04:13 PM

Out to celebrate my oldest daughter's 17th birthday after work, then a few days of goofing off, catching up with relatives, and being away from work.
