Shaving

Somebody mentioned shaving as a particular annoyance. I get annoyed with trying to get a really close shave. I've heard nothing works as well as a straight razor. I'd like to, but I'm afraid I might cut my own throat. Anybody here ever try using one?

I never tried but I can barely get around the curves on my neck as it is with all sorts of technology and junk. I dont get how a straight blade would work? Especially when my GQ recommends one that costs $185, thats ridiculous... I imagine they're cheaper someplace though. Sharp knife sounds better to me, at least it has some contours.

when i was in college my mom gave me a straight razor from her father. i thought cool. and tried shaving with it. ouch! in a matter of seconds i needed a bunch of bandaids.

it was a skill and i think you had to keep it very sharp to get a decent shave. and even if you were good at it i bet you ended up with a lot of cuts. they always kept a razor strop, a big wide leather belt, to sharpen the blade on. and i think you sometimes had to sharpen more than once to get one shave.

you used to hear of parents going after the ornery boys with a razor strop, but by my boyhood there were safety razors in general use except by men my grandfather's age who didnt adjust.

If you don't want to go all the way to a straight razor, have you considered trying a classic "safety razor" - the sort that uses double-edged blades?

My barber, when I was a teen, shaved the neck and around the ears with a mofo sharp razor. he'd strop it on a long leather and carefully cut down to skin. That was a CLOSE shave.

I watched him and his partners shave each other and some customers. Never a nick and no whisker dared raise its bristly stubble around those guys. Lebanese immigrants. I miss the old guys. They were something!

I actually used to use a straight razor, back when I worked on boats...added a degree of excitment to the daily routine. I got into the straight blade thing because I thought it was neat, old style - nowadays I reckon they call it retro. I was also one of those ornery boys who did get whooped with a razor strop. My Dad was really old school back then,

Oh yea....the soap cup and brush are nifty accessories you just gotta have.

I (also?) hate shaving... Someday I'll retire from the guard and never shave again...until the wife complains at least =)

I call it an "Electric Face Buzzer" - its the side-to-side electric shaver thing - It works well on the chin and very curved parts of the face, but lousy on the underside of my cheeks - If I need a good look I just use a "normal" razor there. I think the "circular" electric shavers do better on the neck, but I'm not going to buy/keep 2 electric shavers.

Straight razor = nfw - Disposeable/other razors aare too cheap/available, If I'm going to care about a knife, it needs to look cooler than a straight razor =)

I'd hate to be a woman...

Thumbs up

A few years ago we had a similar thread here at the Shop.

That's where I learned about razors from http://www.greatrazors.com/

I've been purchasing them ever since-- now about three years. I also use a traditional soap mug and boar-brisstle brush. Great shave everytime!

Straight razor yields the best shaving results for me by far...but I only trust a skilled barber to do it properly.

I once had a novice trim my mustache...left some bad cuts just under my nose that took over a week to heal...didn't feel too good after the haircut and shave when the barber applies that stinging tonic!!!

As an African-American, razor bumps are a real problem...the curly hair has a propensity to burrow under the skin and regrow, leaving a bump...you have to extract with tweezers...painful and time-consuming!

I figured out after some years of treacherous skin problems to shave against the grain. But I think my facial skin has toughened up over the years, so no matter what I do, I have very little problems with ingrown hairs these days...
