how long will satellite radio be commercial free?
I'm guessing it's until I subscribe so I'll stay off for the benefit of existing subscribers

As stated before XM has commercials on the talk channels and channels owned by ClearChannel Communications per a provision in their contract. XM has added more channels to offset those channels. The only other breaks are limited Station ads and identifications.

Sirius music is commercial-free
The music stations cost a lot less to operate. The big money for programming is on the talk channels like Howard Stern, Bubba the Love Sponge, etc. They do have some commercials on those. Shoot, they have to go to the bathroon sometime.
