Undeserved rebate?

What do i do?
A coupla months ago i ordered a new HP desktop computer package at office max; waited a coupla weeks & computer was recieved in several shipments.... Dutifully sent in the rebates right away.
After a few days & trying to get the computer to work and looking at red pixels on the new monitor; i delt with tech support in Bangalore India & then the USA tech support. They determined the Computer & monitor are no good.
HP directed me to take them back to Office max for full refund or replacement. i didn't want to go through that mess again so i got a full refund on everything no problem.
This week unexpectedly the $250. rebate checks came.
What do i do with them? Take them back to office max or call HP?
Never had this happen before.

sign the back of them and send it to me.

Of course you cash it. If there is a problem, you can always refund it to HP.

Pay no attention to Aklim

You should clearly endorse it and send it to me. PM me for my correct address. I am the official clearinghouse for undeserved rebate checks, unclaimed freight, lost baggage, missplaced windfalls, tax credits, . .

Deposit it. Consider it compensation for all the inconvenience their defective product caused you.

I think the fact that you posted this squestion here is a pretty good indication that you are going to give the money back in spite of what has been written.

If you will even worry a little bit about cashing the check, just give it back.

Consider it partial restitution for all of the times you've been screwed and perhaps for some of what's forthcoming.

Then again, I might not spend it too soon. Who knows? The mfg. may eventually discover their error and attempt to reclaim the $$$. I'm not sure if they would have legal justification to do so, but I'm sure we'll soon hear from all the arm chair attorneys that frequent this forum.

I'd be real tempted to cash it. Then again, I've run afoul of ill-gotten gain in the past. There was no attempt to scam anyone here, so it's not exactly ill-gotten gain, but it's a bit dicey nonetheless.

Got the same rebate twice on something

I bought a ZIP drive one time (remember those?) and Iomega sent me the $70 rebate twice. It hardly compensates for all the other times I've been screwed on the rebates I was promised for other things.

Now, I refuse to buy anything if the salesman mentions a rebate. If they won't give me the discount on the spot, I just put the item back and leave. Good luck!

One concern is, turning the checks in and some little 2 bit employee goes and signs my name & cashes them anyway.
And
Yes, it was big hassle messing & messing with a defective product and dealing with condecending phone techs with Indian accents, then dealing with condecending phone techs with smarmy American accents;... but I want to do the right thing period, without justifying stealing.

If you're feeling guilty about them, just shred 'em...no money passes anyone's hands.

Well there ya go. Contact corporate head quarters and find out where to send it back. Make photo copies of it before you send it.

Quite likely as the check has already been prepared. Easy pickin's for the "return items" clerk. He/she will have their cousin sign it and both will be at the local watering hole later that evening hollering "Set 'um up!".

Ahem, well, the rebates were for the purchase of the product, no? He purchased the product, yes? Does the offer say anything about having to keep the product? You can't really insure against an implied warranty of fitness problem with a rebate program. Oh wait, yes you can, and they do.

I think years ago I saw a 20/20 or 60 mins bit about people who make livings off of stuff like this and sending coupons back for the cash (two different things, to me) a few years ago. I think it pissed me off.
