Off topic carb question

(My diesel brethren suggested I post this over here also)

I always go to yall first.
Car is an '87 Chevy Nova! Which in fact is a Toyota Corolla with a bowtie.
My neighbors are having severe money issues, and are trying to get this running so their 17 year old son can get a job and help out with bills.
It has sat for about 5 years! Ouch!!
Well, I removed the spark plugs, squirted some oil down the cylinders, checked and added fluids. Had put in some gas conditioner, and a gallon of fresh gas (only 9 gallon tank)
Car would start with carb cleaner, but wouldn't idle or run. I found a dirt daubers nest on rear of carb, keeping some kind of arm from actuating.
Well, it now starts and idles almost perfectly. However, when you depress accelerator to try and rev the motor, it immediately bogs. It will die if you keep trying to increase rpm's, or if you let off it will go back to idle. It also has that "bogging" noise of course when this happens.
It is a little carburated 4 cyl.
Carb cleaner has doused this little carb, but of course no help other than being able to see it.
I'm open for suggestions, and they are desperate. Like happens so often to us, they see me always working on my cars and think I can fix anything.
Ha!
Jimmy

Also, if anyone local or semi-local has a cheap under $500 MB, such as 240 automatic or NA 300D that is a beater but runs, I'm toying with the idea of buying it and letting them use it. If wrecked, I can always use the parts, and if it has issues, I can handle most that aren't too severe.
Good Christian folks, and I would love to help them if possible.

Classic symptom of a bad accelerator pump.

A small pump that squirts a dose of gasoline into the airstream when the throttles are opened to skirt over the lean condition that develops before the main venturis can deliver fuel from the increased airflow.

You'll have to find a carb rebuild kit.......good luck with that.......and replace the pump diaphragm. A good cleaning of all parts will do the carb wonders. There is a special "carb cleaner" for that purpose........rather caustic stuff........don't know if it's available anymore.

That is why I titled it "off topic". Why worry so much on propriety on something like this. This certainly isn't the first semi off topic question over there Brian.
Open discussion is where brain cells go to die........

Yeah, I know. It's been getting a bit out of hand lately and there's some recommendations to keep DD to "diesel discussion". Stereo's for my diesel..........windshields for my diesel..........fuses for my diesel.........somewhere we've got to draw a line.

excuse me, it's where the "creative" cells come out to play. Jimmy L- the universe needs more people like you, how very kind of you to help your neighbors out and even go so far as to find a car you can loan them.

FYI, I think the "Diesel Discussion" forum has been expertly moderated for the 2 plus years I've been on it. I am also impressed with Brian, and will accept his decision, whatever it is.
And if he wants to leave it on "DD" for alittle while longer, I will support that too!

Towards the end of the age of carburators, they made some that could not be taken apart, or even adjusted. I dunno if this one is like that, but it could very well be. Give Jesse a call and see what he says about it. It could be that fixing it exceeds the value of the car.

He's not kidding. "Had carbs" would probably be more meaningful, the latest ones I know of are from the WWII era.

Carburetted cars from the late '80s have miles of vacuum hoses and are maintenance nightmares. Just say no. This beast should rightfully be allowed to die.

If you gotta fix it I agree with the carburetor kit approach. Buy a bucket of carb cleaner and soak it. You can probably pick up a Mitchell manual for the era for less than $10 that shows the vacuum diagrams and tune up and troubleshooting procedures.

Even so, the chances that all of those vacuum hoses will ever be connected again the same way they were in 1987 is next to nothing. That is assuming that they were ever connected correctly.

Not kidding. Some diesels were designed to be started on gasoline with carburators, then switched over to diesel. Someone on DD has owned one like that.
