Charging battery with caps off or on?

I need to charge my motorcycle battery after adding the distilled water. Should the caps remain on or off while charging?

Thanks!!

I never had a problem leaving the caps on. I always used a small charger that can only produce 2 to 3 amps and let it charge overnight.

if you do a high amp charge, the fluid will boil more violently, releasiing more gas, I would remove the caps. With a tickle charge, leave them on.

The only problem with "caps off" is you can get sulfuric acid spray that will land in the immediate area. The spray itself is not noticable but the result is. Yes I learned this the hard way. So if you want to go "caps off" then at least let them rest in the holes to block the spray. I always leave the caps on since the batteries are vented.

When I used to ride, I always just loosed the caps a turn so the rubber wouldn't contact the battery.
