Remove and replace...

I'm having a real pain in the butt...

Well, I am tackling this job and I can say -- It is a real treat.

At the end of it all, I'll make a step-by-step guide since all the info I find doesn't really explain things (like it is 100 times easier if you take the air filter box out before you undo the fluid lines) -- also, replace the lines too, they're crap.

Anyway. My questions... I hope you'll help. I'd like to get her back on the road soon.

Question One:

I have removed the Pinch Bolt, but it still doesn't come apart. What I have done wrong? What should I be doing?

The Pitman arm. I didn't have the larger socket at my current location (I have it elsewhere) -- and I thought I could remove the cotter pin and bolt from the other spot (see B) -- but have found that I can't get it come up off here. Is there a way to do it, or should I be leaving this spot alone? Am I correct in understanding that (A) is where I *SHOULD* be removing the arm? Undo the large nut there and then continue on?

And lastly. Clearance. Right now it doesn't seem that the unit will slide out from under the truck with the stablizer (?) bar in the way -- is there a certain way I need to turn the box or something to get it out, or is just that everything isn't undone yet?

Thanks to all who can help,

Pete

Since everything is rusted in place, start with a good soaking of PB Blaster or similar. The nut, and arm, will be easier to take off of the steering box after letting it soak overnight. You will need a Pittman arm puller to properly remove the arm from the steering box shaft. It should have a notch or something to make sure it goes back on in the proper position. You can get a puller at almost any auto parts store. You should be able to leave the other end in place and swing it out of the way to pull the box. Never done a Cherokee, so I am not sure how the box will come out. Did a full size Chevy not too long ago that was rusty underneath...Boy was that fun!!

Un do number 2 and get a pickle fork to seperate the joint is the easiest way to do it. Removing the pitman arm in the car is not going to help and probably wont swing out of the way even though it may look that way.
The pitman arm has to be removed with a pitman arm puller and is master splined at 90 deg intervals.
