Angry Classic cartoons attacked! Is nothing sacred?

LONDON (Reuters) - Turner Broadcasting is scouring more than 1,500 classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, including old favorites Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, to edit out scenes that glamorize smoking.

The review was triggered by a complaint to British media regulator Ofcom by one viewer who took offense to two episodes of Tom and Jerry shown on the Boomerang channel, a corporate sibling of Time Warner Inc.-owned Turner Broadcasting.

"We are going through the entire catalog," Yinka Akindele, spokeswoman for Turner in Europe, said on Monday.

The regulator's latest news bulletin stated that a viewer, who was not identified, had complained about two smoking scenes on Tom and Jerry, saying they "were not appropriate in a cartoon aimed at children."

In the first, "Texas Tom," the hapless cat Tom tries to impress a feline female by rolling a cigarette, lighting it and smoking it with one hand. In the second, "Tennis Chumps," Tom's opponent in a match smokes a large cigar.

I'm still waiting for Disney to release a DVD version of the Academy Award winning "Song of the South."

I've been expecting this

Maybe 15 years ago, Arthur C. Clarke, in one of his SF novels, suggested that we'd eventually have a profession of "editors" who'd go over old movies and TV shows and edit out, or rejigger, scenes involving smoking.

Big Brother is gaining weight.

Well you know we could start a petition on the Forum and send it to old Ted Turner...

Those old cartoons are good when you're in college, sitting around smoking pot and drinking beer. With enough pot, nothing gets stale.

What do you expect?

What do you expect? This is the same guy who married Hanoi Jane.

Hey why not rewrite history while we're at it, too? I'm sure there's a lot of politically incorrect references in history. Oh, and let's also do away with all flavors besides vanilla, all colors but white, . . . no, wait. Was that racist? Oh, let's get a commitee together to decide! Oh, my God! oh, oh, oh . . . .
. . . danger Will Robinson! Melt down, melt down

Seriously, do you want Elmer Fudd as a roll model? Maybe that's the problem with overweight America. Too much Bugs Bunny as a kid.

I always liked the Road Runner better, but I've still had to work at it to keep my weight down. Don't think your analogy holds water, Kuan.

There's some speculation this will be released on DVD in November, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the movie. I ain't holding my breath...but if anyone is interested, you can sign some online petitions to Disney over at SongOfTheSouth.net.

It's such a bunch of BS...it's a classic, and should be released with no apologies. Even Dumbo has racial stereotypes in it, and they're damn funny. I'm not about to apologize for laughing at a group of crows singing "But ah be done seen, 'bout everything..."

That's just good stuff. If people can't laugh at it, fuggem.

Rewritten history is nothing new...George Orwell was right !

This is chilling too..."“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Göring during the Nuremberg Trials.

Agreed.

And while at it, what happened to the old Heckel and Jeckel cartoons.

Man, I loved those.
