HOW MUCH TENTION ON A FAN BELT with newer cars

mY WIFES SONATA 2001 I replaced the PS AC front fan belt, what a job, had to remove the wheel and some flaps and go in from the side. The 5 rib gates belt is kept tight with an Idler pulley adjust ment the screw type that you just keep cranking untill it feels tight, well I got it to where there was about 1/4 in defection on a straight part of the belt about 16 inches long , drove the car OK the next day when my wife backed out the drive way and turned a sharp turn to the lock stop of the steering ,the belt squealed like a pig then went away, whats the problem

You should be able to turn the belt 90 degrees in the middle of the longest run between the pulleys. If it turns more, it's too loose.

That's what I meant, i.e. twist the belt 90 degrees. This would apply to any flat belt such as your 5-rib belt. Of course this is in the absence of an automatic tensioner. If the belt has a tensioner, you should let it do the tensioning job.

For a V-belt, typically it should be possible to deflect the belt about 1/2 inch in the middle of the longest run.

Thanks, I checked it out and it was way to loose so I tightend it to where I could twist it about 80 degrees. it seems ok now no noise when turning the AC on

The 90 degree test would apply only to a flat type belt, such as a multi-rib belt or a timing belt. For a V-belt you should be able to push the belt in about 1/2 inch in the middle of the longest run.

Is this noise there all the time, or only when the air is on, or when you turn the steering to the full lock position? Make sure the noise is not from the water pump.
