What is the average time for one to get adjusted

to a new work place at a corporate office, such as knowing most things that one can perform one's own duties without having to constantly ask questions or for guidance?

Seems the bigger the company, the longer it takes.

Good Luck

Can you do the "Vulcan Mind Meld" with someone? Usually 6 months, unfortunately the workplace is much like the animal kingdom and there is that nasty Alpha, Beta, Omega thing going on...just remember it's o.k. to ask questions, I'd be concerned if someone new came in and didn't ask.

The hell with all of that, just go in there, and with a smile tell them that they have to adjust to you.

I have found that sometimes it helps to be friend the first person that you can, that can help you. Than as you figure out the office politics go from there.

Frosty:

What you ask and who, where and when you ask it pretty much depends on the job YOU WERE HIRED FOR...

1st: FIND A COPY OF THE COMPANY'S ORG. CHART. It, generally, gives you an idea where you fit into the organization and who YOU report to.

2nd: ASK YOUR SUPERVISOR, OR DEPT. HEAD, PERTINENT QUESTIONS. They don't want to be bothered by "Where's the john?" or "When does everyone take a "cooler" break?" kinda' thing. You should, pretty much, know that stuff by watching the "office-migrating" patterns around you.

3rd: BE CONFIDENT IN EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE IN THAT ENVIROMENT. Just like a jungle, there are the few "office-pythons" that are waiting for you to make a mistake and then they'll ponce on you and slowly squeeze the life out of you and your job. They'll sense your "lost" feelings and use that against you in meetings and behind your back. Don't let anyone fool you that it doesn't happen...remember, you're there because someone else left and the others that are left behind are either: Scared that they'll be the next "out the door" or; They didn't get the job you got hired for. Either way, they AREN'T there to make your job any easier. They feel that they've been "slighted" and they're looking for blood...yours just happens to be the freshest...nobody will miss the "new meat" if it turns out that you couldn't hack the enviroment within the first month or so.

Remember your job interview? That a good place to start...what ever they asked you is, at least, the minimum of what they expect from you. Now, you have to deliver. Whatever you said, they are expecting it, and more.

Good luck.

2 TO 3 WEEKS ?! Are you kidding me ?!

It usually only takes me about 30 minutes!!

I spend about 15 minutes looking through the office manual. I try to memorize things like how fast or how slow I can do certain tasks. Basically, what the office will let me get away with, being new there and all. Then I take about 5 minutes at my seat. Looking around and seeing how things are, and where all the important stuff is. Communication stuff. The stuff that keeps the office working. How to control the climate. Stuff like that.
After that I’ll get out the office steps of operation handbook, and run through all of them in my head for about 5 minutes, looking for/at what it is they’re talking about. Then I’ll run back through them again for 5 more minutes, doing whatever it is they’re talking about with hopes that the office gets going correctly and operates like it’s supposed to.
After that, I figure it’s time to do what I’m being paid for. I call those in charge, and ask if I can take my office somewhere else. And guess what! They usually let me!

But I guess that’s just me.

Personally/Seriously- I think Mark covered it pretty good. Ref. Post 9.
