Crikey! Croc hunter Steve Irwin dead!

Steve Irwin, the "Croc Hunter", reported dead.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/09/04/australia.irwin/index.html

I suggest he wins the Darwin Award for 2006 by DEFAULT. Nobody else was as disregardless for his own personal safety as this guy was.

He was funny, true.

But he had so little regard for his own safety, it was only a matter of time.

He was interesting to watch.

He was also continually misunderestimating the normalcy of the situation.

I had to like the guy in spite of himself, though he could be a bit much. The time he had his baby under his arm while he was feeding meat to a croc was kinda weird. The account I read said he took a stingray stinger to the heart.

Them stingrays are pretty big, I imagine they could lauch those stingers pretty lethally.

Stingray tail tales from the Phillipines

I had a Filipino friend at work in the City, he was about 18 years when the Japs (which is what they were called then) invaded the Phillipines in '41 and he fled to the hills to fight them as a guerrilla, he was 18 years old and full of piss and vinegar. He said they would commit atrocities against the women there, throwing their babies in the air and impaling them on their bayonets when they came down. He had no love lost for them.

He came here as a lawyer who'd practiced in Manila before the Supreme Court there and had a family here, who he'd raised. Went back home to the PI but spent long times here.

Anyway in San Francisco he lived in a kind of rough neighbor hood but still like to take walks.

Those stingray tails were so sharp the Phillipine carpenters would use them for rasps....

So, when he came to San Francisco, he would take his walks without fear, even when he was over 70 years old, he had a stingray tail around his waist
as a belt.

So when the thugs would go after him, on his San Francisco walks, he'd whip off that Stingray tail and flail away at the attackers, he said it worked real good, it slashed up their leather coats like they were made of paper.

I thought that was REAL cool, I may be over 70 but don't F*** with me man or I'll f*** ya up real bad. No gun required. LA GRAN SOPRESA!!!

Walter promised he'd bring me back a stingray tail back from his next trip back home, but he retired, and forgot. I didn't ask him again though

How big are the Stingrays in Australia?

I grew up in south Florida and spent as much time as possible fishing, surfing and diving. I had a buddy step on a Stingray and he had to go to the hospital to have the barb removed. His foot swelled up pretty good and he was off it for a few days. I have come close to stepping on them many times but have always been lucky.

I can't imagine taking one the the chest, forget about the heart. I bet he died within a couple of minutes.

I always thought that he was a little crazy, especially when it came to handling poisonous snakes. But I know that his way of wrestling crocodiles is the same way that the alligator wrestlers do it. Get past that initial burst of energy and then they have to regroup for a minute and that is whn you tie them up and band their mouths.

Rest in peace CrocodileHunter.

I believe even Irwin would agree that a true Darwin Award is one by those who die before reproducing. He left two small children.

RIP.

He was actually an incredibly intelligent and courageous guy. Here is a short list of accomplishments I found. It's a little enviro-wacko but the what the guy has done speaks pretty well for him.

This petition is in recognition of the accomplishments of Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin.

We recognize Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin as someone more than just a colorful character who wrestles crocodiles on Animal Planet. We consider him to be the world's foremost Wildlife Warrior.

He founded the Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation which is at the forefront of protecting habitats and wildlife, creating rescue programs for some of Australia's most beloved creatures, as well as the leading in scientific research that will help save endangered species for generations to come.

Steve helped found the International Crocodile Rescue. For decades he has been on the front lines of crocodile management programs in Queensland, and around the world. Steve does everything in his power to keep rogue crocodiles alive and well, including sacrificing himself.

In memory of his wonderful mother, Steve founded the Lyn Irwin Memorial Fund. All donations go directly to the Iron Bark Station Wildlife Rehabilitation Center with 3,450 acres of wildlife sanctuary. He also owns 83,000 acres of endangered Acacia Woodland in southwestern Queensland called Westbore and started the Brigalow Belt Conservation Project. That’s not all. Steve is buying up enormous portions of Australia for the sole purpose of conserving habitats for wildlife.

Steve Irwin is responsible for starting endangered species breeding programs for the Southern Cassowary, Koalas, Fijian Crested Iguanas, Bilby Rhinoceros Iguanas, Galapagos Giant Land Tortoises, Aldabran Giant Land Tortoises, Mary River Turtles, Peregrine Falcons, Komodo Dragons, and Irwins Turtles -- a newly-discovered breed named after Steve himself. He has also established breeding programs for such vulnerable species as Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, Echidnas, Red Kangaroos, Asian Small-Clawed Otters, Queensland Womas, Death Adders, Rusty Monitors, Canopy Goannas, Yakka Skinks, Reticulated Pythons, Burmese Pythons, Australian Green Pythons, Sea Snakes, Black Cockatoos, Jabirus, Curlews, and his beloved Saltwater Crocodiles.

Steve has helped fund field studies for scores of species of crocodilians, lizards, snakes, mammals, and birds in order to help stave off their habitat destruction and learn exactly what it is those species need to survive. Even today we are learning things we never knew about all sorts of animals, all because of Steve Irwin's work. He is also responsible for the rescue and well-being of thousands upon thousands of animals from all around Australia. His devotion of wildlife and conservation cannot be questioned.

But the most precious of all his accomplishments is Steve Irwin's ability to educate and entertain. He has single-handedly raised conservation awareness across the globe. His message has literally gotten to millions of people in many different languages. For that, we will always be grateful.

Furthermore, we declare our condemnation for the destruction of any Crocodilian species for taxidermy, jewelry, handbags, belts, or any other product. We recognize that one can be a “hunter” without killing, as in a treasure hunter. We love "The Crocodile Hunter", but we abhor Crocodile murderers.

There was a time when I tended to disdain Steve Irwin as an over-the-top clown.

Those sentiments were tempered dramatically when I became friends with a very serious snake enthusiast. His opinion was that, sure, the guy played the clown - but that his knowledge of snakes and how to handle them was truly formidable.

The world's a poorer place without Steve Irwin in it. R.I.P.

Funny you should mention it as I just found this bit of info...

He tells his camera crew to always be filming. If he needs help, he will ask for it. Even if he is eaten by a shark or croc, the main thing he wants is that it be filmed. If he died, he would be sad if no one got it on tape.

As much of a goofball he was, I watched a show with him showing his outtakes and "behind the scenes" stuff as he was filming, and he not only seemed like a real nice guy but he was damn brave.

Shame he's gone, but he went out like he wanted, I suppose.
