Well it's a good thing I don't live there anymore. I'm surprised things aren't changing with the new lower sulfur fuel, though.

But couldn't you have your cousin in some other state buy the car, drive it 100 miles, and then sell it to you as a 'used' car? I'm sure there are loopholes. All 'environmental' restrictions seem to have them.

he can sell him the 93 model year diesel no problems.. its the 07 models which are not being allowed to be sold new.. and in cali you can buy a "new diesel" as long as it has more than 4500 or 7500 miles on it.. cant rember which

Yes, he will. The car was legal to register in MA in 1993 so it's still legal. I guess you would call it a Grandfather clause.

The 2007 cars (VW TDI, MB CDI) don't meet emissions. They are not illegal to buy there, the auto maker can't *sell* them there until emissions are met. Thats why you can register them as a used car but can't buy new.

MA is one of 5 CARB states. There are no new diesel auto sales here since 2004. You can register ANY year diesel auto as long as it has 7,500 miles and has been previously titled.

FWIW, the local dealership had two 2005 E Class CDIs for sale this past summer...both with very lo mileage.

Also, there is a short window (Sept thru Dec 2006) where VW will be permitted to sell the V10 TDi Touareg (which has been fitted with DPF) and must be fueled with ULSD.
