Yak attack!

Last Thursday I was at Oceana Naval Air Station and had an opportunity to fly with an F-14 / FA-18 pilot in a Russian Yak-52 trainer. We went out to the aerobatic "box" near Virginia Beach and did some loops, rolls and inverted flight. It was no big deal for my pilot but it was one heck of a time for me!

You got any pics/vids of you doing barrel rolls/flips?

cmac2012 09-14-2006 02:11 AM

Whoa, that looks like it could have been assembled from WW2 parts. What's the vintage?

Botnst 09-14-2006 08:25 AM

Nice looking airplane, and no vomit on the canopy. Good job!

Very cool! Were you there all weekend for the airshow? My brother drove down and had a blast; he knows the F-14 guys down there (the donated a Tomcat to the museum he directs in IN).

Just shut up!
Why are you rubbing it in our faces??
You are a very very cruel man.:P

How does an ordinary person (like me) get to do this sort of thing?;)

Or how thick your wallet is. At our last local airshow, you could buy a ride in a T-6 Texan for about $90. After talking to the P-51 pilot there, I learned that about $500 would get you an hour or so in one of those. When I win the lottery...

I know, Hattie, I know! It was something along those lines... more than I can justify at the moment, however. The Mustang I saw was based out of the Chicago area. Wish I could remember the nose art name. If I do I'll post more info. The plane was polished aluminum with blue tail and nose, as I recall.

For those of you either in Souther Ontario, or close enough to make the drive from the US, you should check out the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, about a 45 minute drive from Niagara Falls, NY. They have several fully functional warbirds going back to WW1 and they regularly take people up for flights. Here's the price list. If you're Canadian, most of the fee can be deducted from your income tax because it counts as a charitable donation. For $2000 Canadian you can fly on one of the two remaining airworthy Avro Lancaster bombers in the world. $275 will get you a flight on a Harvard or Stearman (without all the other membership stuff listed on this page)

Whenver the Lanc flys over Toronto, the sounds of those 4 Merlins sends shivers down my spine. There's nothing like it.
