Wipers stopped working (89 olds)
 

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

my windshiled wipers just stopped working in the middle of a downpour today... no other option then to pop one off, and clear it by hand... or drive so fast, it'd clear itself (decided against that one :D)


I was messing with the cruise control on my way home from work, to my friends house, and it was flaky (would accelerate, but not hold)... First time I tried to use it accually, and since it's also on the combo switch, it "might" be my problem... dunno...

They stopped working, so After i pulled over and wiggled them, I shut the car off, and checked the fuses. Didnt look like anything was burnt, so I started it, and then tried them again. They moved about 3", then died again... havent worked since (i'm gonna try them again in a few min)

any ideas? It's my moms B-day (46:scholar: ), and I just spend $200 on my car, and scraped another $50 together to take her out to red lobster...... Damn:behead: Broke again...

Any ideas as to what I can do? I work 9-5 tomarrow, its not supposed to rain...

For now, start with some Rain-X. A bottle is only a few bucks. With Rain-X, wipers are not all that important, especially at speed. I use Rain-X on all my windows - I use use a small 6" WalMart palm buffer to make the job easy. Works great.

But on to the fix:
Since both the wipers and cruise went out at the same time, reach under the dash and disconnect and reconnect the plug a few times. Maybe just some corrosion?

Check for 12vdc at the wiper motor connector plug with teh key on and the wiper switch on. If you have 12vdc, the I'd guess you have a problem with the wiper motor assy. If no volts, or les than battery volts, maybe the switch is bad, or a connection is corroded somewhere down the line.

they work again...... WTF???????

I'll pick up some rain X tomarrow, and then after work (5pm) I'll see what's up with it

Our '92 Suburban did that, too. On Suburban, it turns out to be a bad Printed Circuit (PC) board that lives under the motor cover, held on by 3 screws.

I replaced the original with a unit from a junkyard '93, only to be told that the '93s were more trouble-prone than the '92. :rolleyes:

Turn on your wipers, look under the hood, find the wiper motor and give it a bit of tapping, prodding, etc. It might come back to life, but if it does it will be temporary. In that case, seek out a replacement part. Suburban OEM part was about $50 or so, and a LOT better than having wipers quit in the rain. :eek:

happened on my uncles 89 blazer too.... dammit GM...

The wiper switch. It's in the steering column. That switch handle can go bad and is easy to replace. Can find them in most auto parts stores in the HELP section.
Before replaceing anything give the wiper motor a swift kick. And check connections.
Smacking a defective electric motor seats the brushes causing it to work again. If this fixes it you can dismantle and clean.
