Bed Time Stories

Just curious, how many of you read, or have read to your children before bed? What is or your favorite bed time story? I ask because I have a copy of "Where The Wild Things Are" in my studio at work and all the patients comment on it as their favorite story. Still, to this day, I read before I go to sleep..

Oh, yeah - almost every evening - it's part of a pleasant routine. For some time now, though, it's usually been longer books read in installments.

We'll finish The Thief and the Beanstalk this evening. Very good; we'll look for more from the same author.

I have read beadtime stories to the Jr. Azimuths since they could comprehend such things. Though now they are old enough to read to themselves, I stll do it. The stories have evolved into more sophisticated material but they bonding continues.

After so many years of this practice, I consider the idea of stopping with a degree of dread. I suppose I'll stop when they no longer want me to do it...

My daughter's partial to the Fables of La Fontaine, loves The Little Prince by Saint Exupery,Goodnight Moon was an early favorite and some of Oscar Wilde's tales, the selfish giant, the canterville ghost are frequently requested,as are ghost stories.

Never read down to her, ever since she was born, always read to her as if she were 20 instead of 2,thus,now at 7 she speaks and comprehends a writer's meaning and style better that I.

Once, while reading Tikki Tikki Tembo for the hundredth time, I changed certain much repeated words with Gerald Mc Boing Boing type sounds. One example was the first one I did. I said 'Tikkitikkitembonosarembocharbariruchi pipperipembo', but instead of 'pembo' at the end, I made a boisterous raspberry sound with my tongue. The kids roared with laughter. From there we added some twenty other sounds with some being assigned to the boys for better participation.

we still do that one occasionally for nostalgia's sake

my father was a great story teller.

he never read much to us. but loved telling stories of his misguided youth. stories of driving on the sidewalk in small indiana towns in the thirties and similar "evil" deeds. i always marveled that he would tell us those things.

so i have followed in his tradition of story telling to my grandchildren. they love hearing about the day they were born.

i often tell fantasy stories. about going fishing with the grandchildren and taking along folks like mickey mouse elmo and the cookie monster. one day i told a particular story like that in the presence of my five year old grand daughter. a day later she asked me to tell the same story. all was well until i happened to change a detail. she corrected me. after that i deliberately changed a lot of little details and she triumphantly corrected me each time.

kids love stories.

we sing with them a lot too. when they are little i sing old macdonalds a lot taking particular care to do elaborate animal noises.

whatever you do with them is fine. just spend time together doing fun things.

they are only little for a little while.

when they grow up they dont need you much if you have done the right things and had some luck.

I remember Peter and the Wolf narrated by Patrick Stewart

Where The Wild Things Are was one of my favorites too. I can't remember the other one I liked, where the kid bakes himself a plane made of cookie dough or something? in his dream and flies around.

Little Golden Books? I remember my mom reading them, but I can't recall a single story. I'm sure she still has those books...she doesn't throw anything out...going to have to get some from her so I can read to my boy.

I read to all three of my children when they were little. I don't know who enjoyed it more, them or me. I always loved doing voices for the different characters in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Rudyard kipling's short stories, Aesop's Fables. We read a good bit of the Bible, the Harry Potter books.

I also had them memorize tons of things, most notably the golden rule. It seems to have made an impression on them. They are pretty good kids, behave well, and do very well in school. I couldn't have asked for better kids.

Reading with children is one of the best things I've done in my life. I still remember my nother reading to me as a child. What an opportuity to influence another person's life for the better!
