not to be mean, but obviously not. see the difference is this is a MERCEDES BENZ forum. not only that, you posted in the diesel section and i doubt that 325i or whatever is diesel

they are pretty much the same as the 325i i but have a cast crank and a less flowing head if i remember correctly. they are designed to not rev very high and give very good mileage. other than the engine i think they are the same as any other three series six cylinder. the performance engine will swap in but the e engine is not easy to modify to make more power.

bmws in my experience (had two) are a little more fun to drive than a benz but not as tough overall as a benz. the engines are about equal in toughness with specific parts like valve seals and guides not lasting as long. the trannys are mfgrd by the same folks as benz and probably the rear end. the same exceleent bosch electrical parts. the beemer flywheel is a lot softer and wears more.

if a benz is 10 on the durability scale, a beemer is eight and most cars are about a 4. except the jap cars which are 6 to 10 too depending on what parts you are talking about.

the older beemers dont hold their value like a benz so dont pay much for an e. for beemer fans they are considered a step child for their lack of performance. but they would make a good driver probably. and an excellent starter car for a kid. but they wont take a crash like a benz and for that reason i wouldnt put my kids in one.

I bought my daughter a 325es for her 16th birthday. She is 26 now and still drives it. In 10 years the car has never left her stranded, but I have over-maintained it because of who drives it. It has over 200K, still has all the original, major components and gets 32 mpg on the highway with the 5 speed. The car has no rust, uses no oil between changes, never seen a garage in 10 years and of course was abused as only a 16 year old girl can abuse something mechanical. They are as easy to work on as the Mercedes diesels and just as durable. (Cheap parts, too) Of course, this is just one example of many that were made. If you have any mechanical ability and want a fun, cheap car to drive, I highly recommend the 325es. Now, back to diesels.

Good luck,
Tom

BMW 525TDs..

Last year I bought a 1994/5 BMW 525TDs, 130K miles....

The Engine is perhaps the only part that is 'good'....

I use it as a daily driver. Last weekend, I got hold of a M.B. 180TE, 1986 (M110 engine, with Jetronic injection) W123. with just over 100K miles This car had been sitting in a field for around 4 years, covered in green moss and other crud and after a little 'fiddling' involving replacing the Battery and Ignition Module, it was running and drove 250 miles back home ....Faultlessly , and used suprisingly little fuel.....(I did wash the green crud off first!) For a 20 year old U.K car, the bodywork/Interior is excellent

I couldnt believe the difference in the 'Drive' The BMW rides like a piece of Crud, Every bush is knackered and rattles bangs and clunks at every chance! ...I should invest the several Hundred quid I suppose and re-bush the shed....--maybe even find some newish seats too...

Believe me, BMW parts Aint as cheap as M.B parts! (I agree too, the BMW Forums aint too good either...!)

My 525TDs, is probably the VERY WORST example of its breed Ive seen of its age!

It does however have a Very sweet, quiet and for 2.5 litre, a Powerful Diesel engine...

(Anyone put a M51 Turbo-diesel BMW into a W123?? :fork_off: )-No, I couldnt--Would be sacrilage......

The Mercedes, drives Like a REAL CAR! -No hideous knocks rattles or anything like that, No fuss, just a great smooth ride The difference in quality of the BMW and M.B is as wide as the Grand-Canion in IMHO The BMW is half the age roughly of the M.B. and shows all the signs of an 'Old' car..Worn seats, -No seat-cover left on the drivers side, all other seats threadbare and showing 'stuffing' in places The MB, with its 'cloth' herringbone shows just slight 'polishing' on the drivers seat with no tears or anything else..

Twice the age, and ten times as good as the BMW...
