Vacuum Chamber or Degas Chamber...
I'm looking for one... I have my own vac pump, but I'd be interested in the whole set if need-be.
Would also like to pick anyone's brain on these things. Pete |

That's one possible source of a canned industrial solution, but certainly not the only way to get what you want. It depends a lot on the nature of your requirements - size of what you want to degas, and what sort of visual and mechanical access you might need, for example. It also has a lot to do with your budget and how willing/able you are to hunt, scrounge, improvise, and fabricate. Care to share any details about the nature of the application? |

Thanks for the reply! I am using it to degass silicone rubber... I would like to be able to fit a gallon can inside, and IF possible have a clear window or lid. I've found these: http://www.abbess.com/vac/vacuum-econo.html But I'm trying to get one on the super-cheap as I don't even know if my little idea will work. I've been told you can make one... any ideas? |

Just outta curiousity,,,, Why do you need to degas silicone rubber? What are you doing with it?
Building a vacuum chamber is fairly easy, Just a good vacuum pump and a thick acrylic lid with a seal on a big pot and some hoses. Maybe a guage too.

Ok. Here's an update. It looks like the idea to build it myself is going to be easy!
I found this on the net: http://www.taxidermy.net/forums/MoldingArticles/06/0621658C4B.html I've got some great ideas now... this rocks. The reason I need to degas silicon is that when you mix/stir it you often introduce air bubbles. Air bubbles on the surface of the casting isn't good. There are ways to pour the rubber (high and thin) to try and eliminate air... but I want top-quality results on a cheapo dime. Thanks for brainstorming this with me, it really made me take a second look at it. The pump is the easy part, my buddy is lending me his automotive a/c vac. pump for the purpose of my trials (to pull 29.9) I've got some rubber coming to test (some needs to be degassed, some claims it doesn't)... So the fun starts soon. Thanks again folks, Pete |

I gave up on Abbess... their prices were in the $400 range for a tiny one.
