I started out majoring in mechanical engineering...lost interest around my senior year (dumb), gathered up my credits, and pursued a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science. It was already going to take 5 years to complete the engineering requirements, but I added 2 1/2 years to that making the switch.

Despite the 4-year curriculum demonstrated in the catalog, there is no shame in taking an extra year to complete. The core classes offered in your junior and senior year are rigorous! The course offerings seem about the same as I remember when I did the deal (25 years ago) , except our computer-based assignments were handed in decks of keypunch cards!

Typically you get the non-major crap out of the way in your freshman/sophmore years...hence the english/humanities requirements. After that, you pretty much live in the engineering buildings for the rest of your college career.

Political Science/Engineering? Pretty polarized majors imho...can't really blend many classes, so a double major in this case would require 6 years with an 18-hour load each semester (including summers), or a clone...

btw...if you plan on taking a 14 -16+ hours/semester load in the engineering scenario, kiss your social life good bye!

Most Engineering grads actually work as engineers.

Most Poli-Sci grads work as ... as ... as...can someone help me here please?

Look at Tomorrows jobs, employment projections, etc....

My sister graduated with an undergraduate political-science degree (et. al.), and she's now an attorney. But that degree by itself won't do much for you.

Unfortunately, you probably can't complete a double major in engineering and political science in any reasonable time-frame. There is likely little intersection between the programs, once you get past your second year.

My budy is going to graduate and finish up his engineering degree this semester. He worked like a dog that is a hard major, it causes you to drink a lot as well.

Just sign up for whatever it doesn't matter, you will probably change it.

I went in un decleared and didn't declear my major until half way through my sophmore year.

my govt teacher told me that most kids in college change their major up to 3 times before they are happy... im going to look more into the pol-science but engineering will stay on my application for colleges

Go UCF

UCF has an excellent engineering school. It is one of the top ones in the southeast. The campus is nice and very modern. It is a relatively new school that has had phenomenal growth over the last 20 years. They now have more on campus housing than they used to, and there are tons of apartments nearby. It is also close to the Greenway so you can get on at Celebration and take it all the way to East Orlando. It will also be your cheapest alternative.

Screw poli sci. You can get a great job in engineering with excellent starting salary. Once you get your PE, you can have a business on the side doing structural analysis for residential and commercial buildings. Check out the research park connected to UCF. I think there are lots of hi-tech firms in there.

I was class of 86 with a BS in Business Administration.

Don if you are not sure don't decide now. Just get into a decent school with a lot of options. In a year you can decide, change schools whatever.

College is a change, take a semester to figure it out.

after reading the pre-reqs I have an "ice cream" headache. Which can you make a living at? You get so gassed up talking about your science projects it sounds from the ethernet perspective, engineering is it.

I had some of your fears when I entered college... 8 years later I am still a little test-aprehensive (now I'm studying for the CFP). I had some interesting one-mile walks in -10F winter weather @ Rensselaer (RPI). Nothing beats a hike to F-tests for Chem, Materials, Fluids or Diff Eq. where nobody knew anything and a 46 got you a solid "B" on the curve.

If you don't know what any of those mean- don't go to engineering school.

Some lessons learned...
I went to biz school for an MBA 5 years ago- great decision
Don't be afraid to change majors or schools- but don't be a dumbass- get a degree-job-life.
There isn't a job called: poly sci, liberal arts, history, english, basket weaving (wait- i guess someone has to weave baskets ) ...chemistry, pre-med, pre-vet, etc. unless you want to get some serious grad school work done.

-good luck, choose wisely, you have much to learn Grasshopper!

PS.
Engineering sucks- owners make all the $
Nobody has any job security- unless you own the company
