People actually buy into this cult?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology

As PT Barnum said, there is an idiot born every minute. Very wise words indeed.

List goes on, Werner Erhard, est and the Moonies, things get creepy

Remember Werner Erhard and "est", and the human potential movement?
Back in the late 70's and early 80's (in SF) I was badgered to "take the training", then he Werner decided to get into auto racing "Breakthrough Racing" by simply throwing money at the sport, but that didn't work though. Apparently a more benign version lives on called "The Forum" (see: www.skepdic.com for a little bit more info.)

Then of course there is the Rev. Sun Moon (visited by Jusus Christ himself in Korea in 1935) and his Unification Church and the mass weddings.

From the wikipedia page posted by Hatterasguy..

The first Church of Scientology was incorporated in Camden, New Jersey as a non-profit organization in 1953.

It was before my time, but on behalf of New Jersey, can I apologize?

I find it amazing that everytime you hear about Scientology you never hear that L Ron Hubbard was a Satanist along with Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons.

That is definitely one cult you do not want to get involved with.

L Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer who is reputed to have stood up in a convention of his peers ans made the comment that if one truly wanted to be rich, all one needed to do was to start their own religion. The following year, he founded the Church of Scientology according to the story I heard. I can't say for sure that it is true, but it sounds right.

Bot, that list is truly disheartening. On the other hand, celebrities seem to live in some sort of fantasy world far removed from the one the rest of us inhabit. For that reason I guess we should not be surprised.

In a past life I worked with many people seeking to escape from cults like the Moonies, EST, the Children of God, etc. etc. The Unification Church used the same techniques as the Chinese and N. Koreans did (ala Manchurian Candidate), brain-washing. They were typically food and sleep-deprived, and subjected to nearly constant "instruction."

Those people in Hollywood are on there own planet, nothing they do surprises me.

I just find it really interesting that people will buy into anything. Really we are like sheep in many respects.

I enjoyed reading his book "Battlefield Earth" but that's besides the point.

L Ron Hubbard was the protoge of Jack Parsons the "Anti-Christ Superstar". Who was a student/follower of Aleister Crowley, a known Satanist and often described as the most evil man alive.
L Ron Hubbards association with the occult is well documented. If you don't believe me then:

one man's cult is another man's christianity

nothing different in kind from christianity, judaism, islam, etc- except that most of the time these are introduced by the brainwashing of parents and socially accepted institutions such as churches/mosques, rather than by charismatic individuals with mindless followers. The only difference is mass acceptance.
