I work retail, at farm&fleet, in the hardware department... Sucks ass, I work nights, dayshift old people dont do squat, guess who does, at around half of their pay.

I'm asking for a raise on friday, and if it doesnt go well, I'll be telling my manager to kiss my ass, and I'll be doing maintanice at my moms workplace.

self employed architect, construction manager, real estate developer.

i enjoy the work.

the only bad side is when the economy sucks the work dries up. that is what led to the real estate development part.

that part is fun too but can be nerve wracking. risk is addictive and also can cause you to wake up in the middle of the night. though i dont think that is why i am up now.

Howdy Nate,
Don't burn any bridges. If it doesn't go well give the boss a written 2 week notice and be glad to put the experence on your resume.

residential and light commercial. actually right now we have received a little flurry of work trying to be started prior to colder weather. a large home addition, with deck pool etc., a commercial building addition, a commercial development master plan, a roof build up over flat on a church with framing and ultimately shingles, and a small shopping center internal expansion.

and we are working on finding financing to buy a mostly vacant 80,000 sf historic department store on the square downtown and converting it to 46 residential condos for sale and 7 commercial condos.

we are also marketing my current building which has 20 remaining condos to sell. three have sold and the rest are rented. even though it is fully occupied with the high interest rate on my adjustable mortgage it is just trading money and not really making any profit to speak of as a rental. the sales of the condos will generate a good profit when they sell.

and i have on the back burner a project to add a fifth and sixth floor on my current building which would include six townhouse condo units with outside decks. this will have to wait til we presell one or two.

oh and i eventually ate a piece of bread and went back to sleep.

I work for ITW Tomco. ITW stands for Illinois Tools Works. It is a very large global corporation that is made up of very small business with very diverse products. Some of ther better known product lines include Miller Welders, Holbart kitchen equipment, and Paslode nail guns. Where I work the product is 100% injection molded automotive chassis componets. I am the Design Magager. I am responsible for design/developement of new programs. Many of our products center around metal replacement. I design transmission manifolds, intake manifolds, brake fluid reservoirs, alternator rectifier boards, fuel rails, oil sump pipes, and many other various parts. Many of the products that we want to make are common in plastic in Europe, but in the US there is still a big fear of plastics.

I buy container loads of all grades of plastic & metal
scrap material fom recyclers; to sell to brokers & manufacturers around the world.
example is buy truckloads of plastic films from Wal Marts etc ..that is used in dept store packaging; & sell to buyers in China that will use it to make other plastic things............goes around & better than them going to the landfillls.

Interesting and meet alot of interesting people....

i work at a grocery store(Publix) and bag groceries, collect carts, keep the store clean, the occasional stock shelves or make the shelves of goods look nice, i take groceries to the customers car and such. im trying to move up to cashier or to produce/stock clerk. if i move up to cashier ill try and move up to front office staff then be happy or move up again to something else

i got a raise last week from 7.25-7.50$ in 3 more months it will probably go up again since my boss has said in my evaluation which took all of 2 minutes " you do your job how its supposed to be done and how mr george (publix founder) wanted things done. in 4 more months i can buy stock ill probably take a loan out for 1000$ through the company and buy $1000 worth of shares and they will deduct 20$ out of each paychek to repay that loan. since every quarter the profilts get spread to each employee in the company, more stock you have more you get, plus after 1000 hours or one year you can buy stock and the company will give you stock for doing your job in the manner they want..

I always thought converting commercial buildings into living space would be a blast, Tom. I've seen some great projects. I wanted to be an architect when I was in high school, but just never pursued that course. Are you involved with the Green Building Council at all? That seems to be a growing force from all that I've seen.
