Omaha's tough new anti-smoking ordinance banning the practice in nearly all public places comes with an even tougher enforcement policy.

The Nebraska city's elected leaders and police department are urging residents who see violations to call the 9-1-1 emergency system for an immediate response.

I haven't smoked tobacco in over 25 years and cannabis in over 30. In neither case is it anybody's business what the freaking heck I choose to smoke. My exception to that is when smoking impinges on somebody else's right to clean air. Clean air takes precedence.

So if you're a smoker, ask if it's okay to light-up. If you're a nonsmoker, avoid smokers. What is the big deal? Use common sense and a bit of forbearance.

WTF???? We've had state and local governments *****ing for years about people tying up the 911 system with non-emergency calls, and now they want them to call 911 just because someone lit up a cigarette in public?

Back in '77 when I went thru boot camp, our company yeoman was a guy from Omaha. On the data sheet we had to fill out for our company commander, there was a question asking us our reasons for joining the Navy. The only thing this guy listed was "to get the f##k out of Omaha Nebraska". Now I understand his motivation.

Wow there really is nothing going on out there!

CT banned smoking in bars a few years ago, didn't stop anyone, well maybe one bar. There is one I know called Hellwig's, try enforcing a no smoking ban in there...

here we have lafayette and west lafayette separated by the river. west is where purdue u is. west tends to be a bit more liberal due to all the professors living there. both citys tend to have conservative democrats as mayors. (is there any other kind of dem in indiana?)

a year or so west tried to pass a non smoking law. the bar owners raised such a ruckus that it was repealed before it passed (or similar). it was put on a one year holding pattern????

but now many restaurants are going non smoking voluntarily.

as a person very sensitive to smoke, they cant pass no smoking laws too fast for me. smokers tend to be pretty inconsiderate. throwing butts everywhere and such.

some are considerate. thank you.

I love how self-styled liberals are all for defending their own personal freedoms, but don't stay the course when merely infringing on someone else's freedoms.

What's funny, if you did that in NC or VA or where I live, they would fine your ass for abusing the 911 system.

see.... when a smoker smokes in a public place they infringe on the non smokers freedom.

lets see NC, VA arent those tobacco growing states? there is a whole different set of cultural ideals there. tobacco means jobs and money. kindof like cars in detroit.

No, it could be looked at either way, but someone smoking on a streetcorner doesn't impinge on the nonsmoker across the street in anyway, but not allowing the smoker to smoke still does.

They should either outlaw tabacco on the federal level, or stop with this BS. Outlawing it is crazy, so cut the BS.

I can see no smoking on planes and trains, that makes sense because its really bad for non smokers. But out doors come on, people need to mind there own business and stop worrying about other peoples.
