Wierd. I have owned a 7400 and i is the exact opposite of your description. I had a Desert Eagle and there was a certain brand of ammo it jammed often on. Switched out and the problem went away.

I have had a 700 30-06 and it was a decent gun. I never tried a 710 but would be willing to someday. For an all around gun, it was great.

It's my understanding that the 45/70 Govt is a black-powder cartridge.

You are correct, I think its a minor misunderstanding.

Whomever it is, and this is coming from a guy with lots and lots of marksmanship training get a gun that you can carry all day and put a bullet on the X when it counts. A well placed 22-250 is better than a 460 Weatherby in the ass or a clean miss.

The problem I have with 30-06 is the ballistics are not flat and it takes a mathematical genius to properly calculate the uphill-downhill trajectories.

I was trying to make the point that it is breach loading and really isn't that primitive--you are right it is a black powder cartridge.

From a different tack, I don't think a 30-06 is a good first rifle. The recoil is pretty heavy and can affect your ability to learn to shoot properly. I would get a .243 if you need to get a rifle and learn to shoot it, then get something bigger later.

What's funny, is that other than a .22, the first high powered rifle I ever shot was an M16 when they still had basic training at Ft. Gordon, GA. Cool having a dad that can drive on any base in the world

Buy a lottery ticket. Its funny you mentioned it because a coworker was looking at my guns this weekend and asked to buy my Sendaro, I said no because he would never forgive me.

This one was very accurate. It hadn't been accurized, but I still had 100 or so loads the PO had worked up for the gun.

thats exactly the kind of info i was looking for. thank you. the model 710 is also available in the .243 win,270win,7mm rem. mag,30-06,and 300 win mag. the reason i keep bringing this one up is because i like the way it looks and feels. what about 7mm? whats the price difference on ammo between these? thank you ALL for your input.

Like I asked before: What will you do with the weapon? Shoot prairie dogs? Shoot targets? Shoot elephants? Start a collection? Home protection?

I wouldn't buy a gun until I could answer why I wanted it.

Price of ammo is irrelevant because this sorta gun is NOT a plinking gun. IOW, you are not going to the range and letting off 300 rounds. If that is the sorta gun you want, get a 22 LR. This sorta gun you won't let off that many rounds a year. Be realistic about it and you will see that you probably won't shoot more than 50 rounds a year unless you are getting a 243 and shooting prarie dogs or something like that. Say you take it deer hunting, you plan to shoot 50 deer? I think not. So, I have a box of 454 Casull rounds that I am working with. Shot 10 in the last year. Most of them were on paper to ensure that it is hitting what I want. 2 were in meat.
