30-06 is a dog, go 25-06 or if you must have a 30 .300 win mag or something like that.

The ballistics of a .30-06 ain't that bad, folks.
An old timer named Jack O'Conner killed practically every big game animal on the planet with his '06. I think he may even have killed a rhino and a cape buffalo with it. That was a long time ago and the '06 is 100 yrs old and there have been lots of improvements. Nothing means much unless you can put the bullet where it needs to be when it needs to be there. B |

.30-06 is one of the most versatile rounds. My .270 shoots flatter but for an all around gun you can't beat it. Get yourself a good Leupold and you'll be happy.

It really does depend on what you plan to shoot with it, and under what conditions...the venerable 30-06 cartridge is an offshoot of the 30-03 cartridge developed for the Mod.1903 turnbolt rifle, and is still a great all-around cartridge for North American game. Keep in mind it went into service in 1906, so it's been around for a long time, but that doesn't make it bad, by any stretch. I think deer hunters have a tendency to go overboard, and "overgun" themselves. My brother in law hunts whitetail with a .375 H&H Magnum, which is a dangerous/big game cartridge...I don't see the point. So, what are you planning to shoot, and what kind of ranges are we talking about?

BTW, I have an affinity for .257 Roberts and 6.5x53R...they do everything I need them to do, and I don't feel the need for the latest and greatest super high velocity magnum.

I've owned several brands of 30-06. It all depends on what your going to be using the rifle for. It's a pretty good all around gun capable of bringing down about anything you shoot with it. I personally have started using the 308, which to me has one of the best long range capabilities I've ever used. I guess that's why it's regarded as the best sniper rounds in the world. I prefer Browning, but the last 30-06 I had was a Remington 7400, and I loved it.

If you want the rifle for target shooting, I'd recommend the .223. Ammo is much cheaper for that one. If you want something more traditional looking than the AR15, consider the Remington 700, if the 710 isn't available for that cartridge.

And for factory rifles Sako or Tikka are the best things going. For scopes Leopold has gone to crap as well; Zeiss or Swarovski is the way to go. |

my late father had two 30 06s. an infield which he handmade a sport stock for and a box stock spring field which he bought for like $7 after ww2. my mom has them now.
i have fired the enfield a few times. best brace your feet well and be sure it it tight against your shoulder. it has a stout kick. but at a hundred yards or two it will shoot exactly where you point it. and make a hole in an 8" diameter tree as if it is a milk carton. i have no expereince with any of the other guns mentioned. dad knew a lot about guns. particularly rifles. shot in competition and was good enough to be invited to try out for the olympic team in about 1950 or so. he respected the 30 06 a lot, but never hunted with it that i knew of. tom w

I do like .243 also, I have a square-bridge Mauser sporter action Interarms Mark X in the safe right now, 22? inch barrel, full length Mannlicher-style stock, 3-9 power variable Simmons scope...bought it becaue I like the stock, but it's a good-shooting little gun too.
