so jumping on hogs and killing them with a knife qualifies as history?

although what you say is true in general i dont think it applys to the hog jumper.

I know a group in Pearl River Cty that hunt them with dogs & knives. They eat what they kill. Whoa.

If you were a publisher and your goal was to make money, would you presume the public would rather read about the hog jumpers or the last two years of your life?

I heard a neat story on NPR about one of the high dollar big game hunts on some South American game preserve, the sort that's coming back into vogue, wherein the high fees that are paid to take a few animals provide the money and motivation to protect the habitat and the rest of the herd from indiscriminate poaching.

One guy with some conservancy was along to monitor the whole thing, a fellow who'd had little time or tolerance for hunting previously.

After they'd killed the critter, I believe it was some kind of exotic mountain sheep, the native guides helped them dress it and they cooked some of it up right on the spot, in the traditional way.

The observer guy said it was one of the more profound experiences of his life.

We should'a stayed hunter gatherers. Way more honest than raising pigs and chickens in tiny cages.

Beyond the butchering method mentioned in the link, they butchered them immediately after taking them out of the wild.

A number of guys around here, catch 'em and feed 'em out on corn for awhile before butchering them. Who KNOWS what that hog has been eating in the wild? After a while on corn, they make meat about as good as a domestic hog.

I don't see anything primitive about that forum. Those guys are funny. Playing caveman.

You mean "Beggin Strips?"

I haven't been around when a hog was butchered since I was a kid, but I get the benefit around here quite a bit. A number of the guys at work hunt hogs and feed 'em out to butcher. They bring every kind of pork product you can imagine to the lunch table and pass it around. Their bacon doesn't look as neat as your "beggin strips" but it sure tastes GREAT!

They also bring every kind of sausage that you can imagine, breakfast and Summer types. They have a whole cottage industry going for their own consumption. They make venison & hog, venison & buffalo, venison & beef, venison & venison and the combinations along with the different spices and methods are endless.

It's tough to keep the weight off working around here, especially this time of year.

SWMBO and I came close to 'bagging' 3-4 of the bastards with the Town Car last Saturday night. She was driving us home from supper out with friends and spotted something on the road at the edge of the headlights, slowed down (we never run too fast at night on the FM road to the farm) and got stopped just in time to have a sounder of 15+ toddle across the road 5ft in front of the car.

I heard that they are knocking them off pretty regularly on that fancy new 85 mph highway east of Austin. Not sure exactly where that road passes, but I think it must be sort of in Leatherman's neighborhood.

I saw one, a BIG one, that had been hit by a vehicle on the FM road a couple of miles from my house. We call it the "deep woods" through that stretch and I set the cruise control on 45MPH when driving through there at night. Not only the hogs, but plenty of deer to dodge.

The one that had been hit, must have REALLY messed up a car or even a really heavy pickup.

As it stands now, we don't have a shortage of them, but there are enough hog hunters to keep them reasonably well controlled. I know that this status could change most any time.

I bought a Remington .22 WMR semiauto and mounted a Paladin NV scope on it. Makes a fine hog killer. Would be a lot better with a bipod as the NV scope is freaking heavy and badly unbalances the rifle. Get 1-2 good shots before the hogs freak and scatter. My local hogs have moved to a different area I guess. Haven't seen sign in months.

I wish I could spring the $$$ for a suppressor. Been looking at them on youtube. But the dang permit is freaking $300 or so. And you have a registered mod that you can't sell.

And yeah, they taste fine. I shoot small ones, cochon du lait size and a bit larger. Not more than 100#. C'est bon!

People are such genius morons.

Insurance companies will tire of the claims and introduce "hog flu" or something similar. We all have to get vaccinated. Blame it on Obamacare.
