When you go, ask where is the caldera?

I really want to get back there with the kids before the whole thing goes.

What a nice rural town. The entrance to the park is about a 1/4 mi. down the road. I stayed in-town at a place called the 3 Bears Lodge. Not fancy but kinda unique and good for strolling the local shops and restaurants. Some big chain hotels/motels around but I'd rather enjoy unique lodgings compared to the ho-hum environment of big corporate chains. Good town to stock up on any supplies you might need for the park.

Perhaps a possible place to hang my hat one day, civilization surrounded by natural beauty and unlimited outdoor oppurtunities. Only downside is that one day that Volcanic time bomb might blow and the whole area will be flattened and burned. But there's always a downside to everywhere, probably worth the rewards vs. the risks.

We're heading out next Wednesday for a 3 day canoe trip on the Colorado River. It can be quite pleasant this time of the year if you catch the right weather system.
