airport questions
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/31/missed.runway.ap/index.html
I thought the basic design driver for a runway is the aircraft landing impact it will take. Probably more critical because it's usually easier to make a runway longer than stronger. 1) Are taxiways usually built strong enough to take a landing? Seems like overkill. 2) What is the basis of numbering runways? An aerial view of Newark Liberty shows the main runways are 4 in one direction and 22 in the other. Obviously not numbered for the heading or bearing. Thanks, Sixto 93 300SD |

Funny how this seems to be a re-occuring theme with Continental. I understand that their jets have landed so hard they broke the struts and it was at the Newark airport...

1) taxiway are strong enough for a large airplane to land on them but they are not built to handle repeated landing like a runway. If fact, the ends of the runway where the planes touch down are much thicker then the center portion. 2) runways are numbers depend on the compass direction the pilot sees when landing. South is a heading of 180 degrees and north is 360 degrees, drop the zero so a runway that runs north / south is numbered 18 and 36. If an airport has two runway that run north /south, the numbers are 18L (L for left) and 36R (R for right ) for the runway on the east side of the airport. And 18R and 36L for the west side runway. |

A GREAT landing is when the plane can fly again

And....
...as if a botched landing wasnt bad enough.
Some guys can even screw up a take-off. A bit of over-rotating here. (Can you say "Airspeed Indicator" boys and girls ?)

I guess the service mechanic got his or her wish for easier service access to the APU.

During some runway rebuilding projects, parallel taxiways have been used as runways temporarily.

And - Usually it's only given as an "option" to the pilot. (Probably has something to do with lawyers )

I'm amazed
I'm really amazed at the taxiway landing.
1) the fact that no one was hurt or killed Newark is a very busy place 2) the fact that both the pilot and co-pilot watched it happen, I assume. I wonder who said "Oh S***!" first? The pilot, the co-pilot, ground controller, tower controller, or the poor guy driving the van or car on the taxiway who just got out of the way in the nick of time, who's not saying anything to anybody and is still at home hiding under his bed.
