There’s good and bad Chuck. Because it’s such a bulk item, it’s often not stored properly and starts to go bad.

Not that I would personally know from experience, but true Chuck connoisseurs are savvy. Before making a volume purchase, they open a case or two, remove a bottle from each, stash the now one-bottle-short cases behind other merchandise (remembering which bottle came from which case), and check out. In the parking lot they pop the bottles and taste test. If either’s a good batch (meaning higher than “not disgusting” quality), they head back in to purchase the rest.

We entertain quite a bit. After we’ve gone through a few bottles of good stuff, I break out the Chuck. No one has ever complained. The blends that they call shiraz, merlot, and cabernet are all pretty drinkable.

I like guilt free feeling of opening a $3.00 bottle of sauce.

I hear that...I haven't tried the chuck but there are some other "value" lines that I like, and the occasional surprise I've bought along with other stuff just because it was cheap and unknown to me.

I've only seen this at Trader Joe's. I thought maybe it was their house brand or something. Is this not the case?

How about white wines? Do they make white wines? Are they any good? I'm not much of a wine drinker, but every now and then it's nice with the right food.

I actually got the stuff to make marinade for sauerbraten. Opened some and decided to try it. I really isn't too bad, 80 out of 100 points I suppose. I opened the Cab. Flavors are there but thin.

Yes, Chuck makes a chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. His reds are definitely less bad, though. I get ours at Trader Joe's.

2 Buck Chuck is not TJ's house brand but a wine made by an individual company that is not Charles Shaw. Here is an excerpt from an article about 2 Buck Chuck.
There's also the story that Charles Shaw is a bighearted billionaire who wanted to expose the proletariat to the finer things in life.

Actually, it's an over-abundance of grapes that's made Charles Shaw cheap to bottle -- an estimated 5 million cases so far. It's easily outselling more famous brands like Mondavi and Gallo in California.

And Charles Shaw?

It's a wine label owned by Fred Franzia, a distant relative on the Gallo family vine. He's a reclusive businessman considered a pain in the neck to California's wine establishment.

Franzia controls scores of brands and labels including Charles Shaw that under-sell the prestige vineyards. And "Two Buck Chuck" is just his latest broadside: "We have others up our sleeve we think are even better coming out."

He also controls more than 30 square miles of California vineyards. And he thinks big. Next he plans to take on invading Australian wine makers.

"We're going to take 'em on. Slap 'em around as hard as we can!" he said.

Yes they do make white wines but they are not nearly as good as the reds. To me they taste like Panther Piss.

Where to get Two Buck Chuck in DFW? There is no TJ around here, though we did pick up a few bottles of Charles Shaw from TJ up in Chicago...
