In my Honda Accord. The 300E is still junked in the backyard with 240,000. I asked a local Honda dealer if Honda offered high mileage badges like Mercedes and he said " Naw, we see that kind of mileage all the time. It isn't uncommon for Hondas to do half a million without any major work." Imagine that!!

Rare in my area, usualy they rust out first!

I live in a non salt area. No rust problems that could'nt be solved with a piece of sandpaper and a spray bomb of white Rustoleum. I replaced the head gasket and the clutch at 292,000 miles. It was the first time the engine had been touched. (Other than a timing belt at 165,000 miles. Cost, $28.) I have replaced both CV shafts ($65 apiece) the water pump ($23) the alternator ($70) the AC compressor ($175) and the front brake rotors ($18 for both). I got 92,000 miles on the last set of Bridgestone tires (70,000 mile tires). The little car is amazing. It is still nimble on the road and no rattles. I drive it over 300 miles a day and don't feel tired when I get out of it.

The bad news is that a Honda is a front-wheel drive car, and I just can't drive one of those for long periods of time. I bet my MB ends up at the 350k mark someday without a rebuild.

My Mercedes is at 240000 miles, my old 84 toyota pickup 22R/auto hit 545000 untouched and my old 93 silverado 305/stick was sold at 315000+ miles with an untouched drivetrain. Once your learn the vehicle and maintain/operate it as such they tend to outlive the common "ignored" vehicles. Heck, I had a 86 Pontiac Grand am 2.5/stick that went 230000 untouched before I traded it.

Actually. I dont believe that it's common at all. How does one verify that? given that they dont have six digit odometers. And how many twenty to thirty year old hondas are still on the road and thus if not still on the road how do they accumulate that mileage? You will always have properly cared for vehicles that typically drive long distances per day, from just about any competent manufacturer that are able to rack up big mileages, but I just dont believe those who claim it's common on other makes without proof.

The business that I am contracted with has "city" delivery vehicles that just run local deliveries. They use Ford Ranger pickups (automatics) and several of them have 350,000+ miles on them without an overhaul! They claim that they do only basic maintenance, oil and filters, and different people drive them daily. Point is, Mercedes doesn't have the lock on dependable high mileage vehicles.

You may want to look at some before making that statement. All the Japaneze cars and trucks that I have owned had six digit odo's, not counting the "tenths" barrel. My Accord has a seven digit odometer!

Seems you're right there. Guess I was remembering the jap junk from the seventies my family had. Must admit I've never looked at a jap cars odo in about 10 years.

Is it fair to compare a Diesel to a non diesel?

OK, I have to ask. If you didn't know, and the roads were not otherwise icy or slippery, how could you tell?

FWD has nothing to do with comfort or Cadillac would have been dead long ago.

Why can't you drive a FWD for a long time?
