Red light scameras are a waste of taxpayer money. All they are is a source of revenue for the local police. The don't prevent accidents, they CAN be triggered by accident, they encourage illegal activity (Reflective license plate covers, IR emitters, etc.), and they reduce the amount of real police officers on patrol (Again, to increase revenue) which results in higher crime rates in the surrounding areas.

One day they installed cameras and she didn't know. Then she went to Africa for some reason. While she was there her parents got one ticket after another, and each one had a photo of her going through the intersection with her fist raised out the window.
Now THAT is funny as hell... thanks for posting!

Or, just have a buddy paint over the camera lenses.

nothing is illegal until you get caught. In this case, she is caught. Next time run without a front licence plate. Also if you are paranoid, get one of those covers for your rear

Pay or go to court. Stop running red lights or
you will kill somone. Red light tickets are not there
to make money but they may save lives.

Considering that the cities farm out the red light cameras to private companies that take a cut, I take exception to this statement. This is not to excuse running red lights, but rather it is a criticism of the enforcement technique.

If they weren't there solely to make money, there would be points on your license.

Just sent the DC Treasurer $100 last week for driving at a safe speed and following the flow of traffic. They install speed cameras not only in areas that have a lot of accidents, but also in places where the speed limit is unusually low-- to GET MONEY!!!

Found this at the bottom of the thread.

I just "unofficially" bought my own can of the stuff.

The DC government and the company that intalls the cameras there can go "do something" to themselves!! I'll leave it at that.

Red light cameras seem like the least expensive way to stop many
red light runners. Just knowing that there may be a camera will stop
most.

Then how would the cameras get paid for and the cops get paid?

I once got a camera red light ticket in the mail. It was for a late 90's red Honda 2dr.obvious in the picture but with only the first three letters of the license plate legible. The letters were the same as the first three on my 85 cream 300td and I got the ticket. I'm assuming they must have sent it to everyone with those first three letters in the hope that one or more would pay. Obviously they made no attempt to correlate the make and model of the car associated with the license plate with the one in the picture. I'm assuming their computer simply pumps them out with the highest revenue in mind, regardless of justice.

In CT you are supposed to have two plates. I have a euro on the front of my car for about a year now, and have been pulled over once during that time. Cops have never said anything about it.

Tints are subjective, and the stuff that hides your plate is hard to see.

I'm the first one to say drive right and don't run red lights. I object to big brother collecting tax money in this way. So much so I'd rather pay a ticket every few years for driving without a front plate vs a camra.

Get a cheap bicycle and mount it on the back over the license plate. Get a big ice chest or a Christmas wreath and mount it on the front to cover that license plate. Get a canoe or a row boat and put it on the top forward enough to cover the hood so the camera does not catch your face.

The problem with the camera system is that it is designed to enhance revenue. The companies marketing them have even been know to advise shortening the yellow lights so as to increase the cash flow. The solution to red light runners is two-fold. One, you start putting cops near any intersection that has both a high frequency of red light runners AND accidents. Yes, that means the cops actually have to do their job. Most do with no complaint. Second thing is you change the timing of the lights. First by making sure there is enough time for grandma to see the light change to yellow and react to it with the pedal at the posted speed limit. Second, you make all four directions red for a second or two, and heavily publisize it. This little trick has been proven to be the best way to decrease accidents at intersections. Of course, it does nothing to improve the city budget.
