Smart Car legal in US?

Are Smart Cars legal here now? I thought there were not coming over until 2008, but i have seen a couple of used ones on Craigslist. Whats the scoop?

Someone is modifying them and importing them already. I posted a thread about this a few months ago. There's a dealer outside Denver.

My girlfriend and I saw one in the DC area a couple weeks ago.

A buddy of mine is a proud owner of a Cooper Mini and always brags that it's the smallest production car in the US. I called him and gave him the bad news.

They are not worth the money. They are cheaply built, Swatch designed, CR@P. ZAP converts them and sells them for almost $30,000. They are only worth about $10,000-15,000 in Europe. ZAP removes most of the cool European features (Automatic corner adjusting headlights, all but 2 air bags, no diesel option, lots of electronic operations, and cheap roof padding added). Avoid them like the plague. The ONLY good point to them is the Turbocharged Mercedes 0.6L gas engine. A VW with a TDI will get the same MPG with more cargo/passenger space, be many times safer, better built and more fun to drive.

Think about it. You would be paying $30,000 JUST to get 45-55mpg and a queer looking egg. For $30K I could buy a brand new C230 or a 1998 SL600.

My test drive of one "federalized" by ZAP. Smart cars for sale in Colorado

I was on the 10 freeway....I think and I saw a masked/taped car driving in and out of traffic. I merely caught a glimpse but it definitely was a Smart Car.

This one was photographed last October at a GTG in Irvine.

I saw one of those things running around here last week. It looked like an enclosed golf cart. Could not possibly be safe in traffic.

The smart car would fare better than that F150. You don't see how the passenger cell just crumples up like a piece of tin, smashing and trapping everyone inside. The problem is the smart car being so light, and there being such comparatively heavy cars on the US roads.
