Sold my Travco, new owner totals it

Sold my really fine Travco Wednesday to a nice gentleman from Atlanta. I read a post on ClassicRV today that on the way home, he rolled it and totalled it outside of Deadwood SD. He's ok but what a bummer for him. It's also sad to see a vehicle that survived that long meet its demise.

It had the 413ci truck engine. Great motor, only 41k original miles. They are similar in aesthetics to the GMC motorhome although I think the mechanicals are simpler and more reliable in the Travco. GMC was front wheel drive, Travco rear.

They first came with a 455cid engine. (0-60mph in 22.5 secs) Later they downsized to a 403cid.

Their biggest downfall was lack of insulation and a undersized generator - you could only run 1 A/C unit at a time. You really needed 2 A/C's (not a factory option) to keep cool in the summer.
They got decent mpg...around 10-12, and the FWD was great in the snow.

Weren't all the appliances electric in the GMC? My friend has one that is set up that way. It's dysfunctional for boondocking. Travco did set up some of theirs that way but most had gas fridges and furnaces although typically electric hot water heaters.

The 1973 26' Glacier that we had, had a gas stove, hot water heater, furnace, and 3-way fridge. The engine was also dual fuel capable (Propane & gasoline). (the dual fuel was an add-on)

oh yeah, i always liked them too. they have some fairly complex systems though with the air bag suspension off the big busses.

i also like the airstream motor homes and the vixens.

good design is always an attraction to me.

I looked at an Airstream. Junky particleboard interior.
Love the Vixen, particularly the earlier diesel models.
The only drawback to the Travco 220 is that it lacked the rounded rear 1930's bus look that the 270 has. The 290's and 320's also lacked that vintage rear. Travco made a few diesels right before they went out of business. Some were pullers and some pushers.

there was a time, and i dont know the exact years, that airstream put out some cheap interiors with too much paricle board. my 97 has real plywood in the cabinets, mostly, but only after i bought it did i find out that it has particle board, OSB, actually in the floor....ouch!

i much prefer ply wood. in the homes i build and design, i try to avoid OSB in the floors as much as possible. i use it in wall sheathing and roof sheathing though.
