Don,

Please don't sign anything until we have had time to talk.

I got out 5-1/2 years ago as an nuke Electronics Technician First Class (ET1) - a Reactor Operator. Been there, done that. I have lots of good information for you.

I'm not here to talk you out of it. I'm here to give you the no joke truth. Not the stuff the recruiter will give you. You decide. Knowing what you are getting into up front will make all the difference in the world. If you know what you are in for and go ahead and do it then there can be no regrets.

PM on the way.

-Jim

On a previous subject, I think there is at least one surface combatant ship, not a carrier, that is a nuke. Not sure it's designation.

Found it: CGN. CG is a cruiser, "N" is nuke.

CGN-9 Long Beach
CGN-25 Bainbridge
CGN-35 Truxtun
CGN-36 California
CGN-38 Virginia

Example descriptor:

All of the CGNs are decomissioned. You have your choice, bird farm or turd.

Yeah, somebody previously pointed that out. I think the Bainbridge went into commission during my enlistment or shortly afterword. I remember a recruiting poster of a CGN, Enterprise, and one of the nuke subs sailing abreast. It stuck in my mind.

It makes sense to decommission surface nukes on a small vessel. Imagine what could have happened had the attack in Yemen been against a CGN. Perhaps a busted reactor with all that radioactive crap going into the water. People just think a coelacanth is strange.

(Hijack in progress)

What do you submariners think of that german flick, "Das Boot"?
