I don't think they have girls on the submarines. And if they do it's probably 25 guys to 1 girl. I do wish you luck though.

Retmil (sp?) is a retired nuke.

I was a conventional steam guy on a surface ship.

What happened to the college idea? How about going to plumbing school or becoming an electrician? Navy is OK, but a good plumber can buy a new Benz in a year. Right now, I can't even get one to call me back. I want to add a new bathroom. A 3 day $3000 plumbing job ain't worth their time when they can do $5000 or more job in a week.

That's a myth perpetuated by the Village People.

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand

Um, submarines don't stop in at foreign ports. You will see Home Port and your bunk. Oh, and there are no portholes...

Go for it!

I was almost NuPrOCS subs myself way back in 1971. I passed everything but minimum uncorrected vision. Bummed me out big-time.

Best of Luck

Been there, done that, got the proclamation.

To people who look for homoeroticism, most male-male interactions are, by definition, homoerotic. I am no longer certain the term has concrete meaning. If it ever did. In my own experience I did not find any of the horseplay sexually exciting. It was mostly silly and occasionally mildly degrading, like other male rites of passage in which I have been a participant. The outcome is predictable: You can't wait to inflict the humiliation on some other innocent.

Exactly.

Concerning education, the nuke program is extremely intensive academic training. Two guys who work for me went through the nuke program (both were ET's, not MM's). They are excellent problem solvers and bright as can be. From what they tell me you better have a heck of a memory and understand "attention to detail."

If you get rattled in high-pressure, high-intensity situations where quick and accurate technical analysis are required then you are not going to like propulsion engineering school.

The Navy wants you to succeed, especially in those extraordinarily selective schools, but the wash-out rate is pretty high. IIRC there are benchmarks along the way that if you fail, you go to alternate paths with reduced obligations.

But make no mistake, they have your ass. The Navy's contract will be enforced at their discretion and pleasure, not yours. My experience in the Navy shaped my life in many ways, and not all good. It is the worst nightmare experience of a bureaucracy imaginable because tradition is a second God. But a flexible mind and attention to detail will be the two best tools you have for success.

At the company I work for, our Human Resource Manager's son joined the Navy, and is now in the nuclear submarine program.

Is there anything you'd like to ask for you?
